    Bad coil ? 2004 DHS

Can a bad coil cause the engine to jerk/jump. Coil 2 is bad on my car according to a mechanic altho theres no fault code coming up for it. It doesn't do this jerk/jump all the time but when it does it's usually when in park or when my foot is on the brakes.

A 'bad coil' - no spark to a plug - would cause a miss most or all the time, probably most evident at slow speed or idle. Yes, the engine would shudder. A bad fuel injector would cause almost the same problem(s).

Hmmm ok thanks a mill sub. Oh and 'shudder' you hit it dead on! I was trying to find the best explanation and you got it. Yeah my mechanic told me a while back that coil 2 was bad and I almost forgot all about it. But I need to change that asap because I just changed out my spark plugs. There's no SES showing up for it though... unless it shows up when pulling codes from the DIC...?

Also does anyone have a chart showing which # coil is which?

#2 coil = the coil for cylinder #2. Front bank, second in from the left when standing in front of the car.

Didn't 2004 go to the actual coil-on-plug racks - 4 separate, replaceable coils, bolted to a s/s plate ? (and the individual coils are sort of hard to find .....)

Oh ok this is simple enough! Odds in the rear left to right and evens in the front left to right.

I just reread what you posted... "front bank second in from the left if standing in front of the engine"... so is that or is it just like the number sequence you wrote?

Whoa wait what is this?? Either I misunderstood what the mechanic ment for coil or I simply dont have this. I thought the coil was the boot/wire thats held in by a star screw thats covering the spark plug?

The boots (with coil springs inside, essentially short plug wires) are attached to the coils. Coil/boot assemblies are usually sold as sets of 4 though.

I initially posted info on the '00-'03 ignition system, totally different than yours.

    Yeah, that ^^^

Here's the 2000 - 2003 Northstar coil cassette setup - one cassette on each bank.

Oh ok thanks for clearing that up guys. So as for the coil boot for my 04 DHS I have to buy a set of 4 or I can buy them individually?

Well of the coil tested bad, you need the coil, not the boot. Normally, they're sold on sets of 4.

Ok now I'm a lil confused of what a coil is and what a boot is. The mechanic mentioned that coil #2 was no good. Again I thought he was referring to the coil/boot you remove to get to the spark plug??

The boots are not replaceable by themselves on the 04-05. I had a similar miss on the 05 I used to own. Took me over a month to find it But I found that the boots on the front coil bank did not fit real tight on the plugs. I used dielectric grease on the boots, and it fixed the problem. The front coil bank did not look like the rear, I think it was aftermarket. But I would try the grease trick before I buy a coil.

#2 is the coil and boot. I believe they come as one.

I'll have to pop the hood and look because when I changed out my plugs I didn't see anything that resembled these pics.
