    Transmission Just Quit

First post here. My '95 Deville (4.9L engine) was driving along just fine at 60mph when I attempted to pass a truck and all of a sudden...NOTHING. It just stopped pulling. Now it just has 1st gear, no reverse, and when I try to let up after attaining shift to second speed it slips out of gear and doesn't pull anymore. The trans fluid is a grayish red and smells slightly burned, there are no codes stored.
A simple fix or time for a rebuild?

Rebuild if a burnt smell is emitting. Strange that it went out without any other early symptoms such as slippage.

Sounds terminal to me like nek said, burnt smell not a good sign.

I'll do the pan drop and post back after. I'm kind of old and crusty and hate crawling under vehicles any more except for simple maintenance. Most local guys tell me it is most likely in need of re-build. Most quotes near the $2000 mark. Only paid $700 for the car 2 years ago. Found a fairly local mechanic who said he'd do a trans trade out for $300 if I supply the trans.
Anybody know a re-builder who will work with a private party in the Chicago area?

It's possible you have the damage on the left:

    Sorry, but I'm in NY.
