    2000 Deville headbolts?

I have blown a headgasket on my deville. I removed the engine and one head so far. I have read that the 2000 and newer have 2
different sizes of head bolts but they were all the same size. Was my engine swapped previously or did they put the older engines in some of the 2000 models? Also do i need the 99 and down head gaskets and bolts for the repair?

GM lengthened the bolts in 2000 and went to a coarser thread pitch in '04. You will need to drill and rethread all 20 bolt holes and then insert the holes with NS300L or timesert inserts or studs. They should all use the coarser thread pitch.

All the bolts will be the same size, but there should be 2 different lengths for the upper and lower set of holes if your engine is a 2000.

    Re: 2000 Deville headbolts?

The way I understood it they only lengthened the upper bolts. I just looked at the stud kit instructions and on the 2000+ kits there are 2 different lengths of studs.

    ----------

That is why i asked all of mine were the same size and length but it is a 2000 model.

Oooh...If I recall correctly the stock bolts are the same length but the depths of the upper and lower holes are different. So the studs are longer/shorter for each. You should be able to look at the back side of your block (firewall side when installed in the car) and get the code stamped onto a boss about halfway down that will tell you the year of the engine. Look for a Y at the second digit.

    Re: 2000 Deville headbolts?

I am lost now. all the factory bolts are the same. I used a coat hanger to check the depths of all the holes and they are all the same. I couldn't find that code on the back of the block but it is still attached to the trannny and that head is still on so i may not be able to get to it. which kit do I buy?

2000 4.0/4.6 Northstar has two thread depths,
35mm upper bank and 51mm lower bank. This is measured from top of the block to the first starting thread.

There's a pic in this thread for where to find the engine code:
