'94 Deville ATF Change

Remove this ad
So i was at Midas like 6 months ago cause they suckered me in with a free oil change, and they did their 21 point inspection so they could tell me there's a bunch of non-existent problems with my deville.

And one of those problems was with my tranny they said it was in dire need of changing, it was black and burnt. So i asked them to do it . . . i was there afterall and they refused. And Midas doesnt seem to me to be a place to turn down free money. But apparently my tranny was overfilled and the head mechanic said this was really bad in a Cadillac. And told me to goto a transmission place . . . which i didnt. So now 6 months later im just gunna do it myself and save myself the $150 going to a transmission shop.

umm so my question is, is this overfull thing that catastrophic that i actually need to goto a transmission shop and would be bad for me to do it myself or were their mechanics just really lazy that day.

And if its ok for me to do it myself, how much fluid am i gunna have to put back into this thing. And any problems i should look out for when im doing this, or tips you guys have. Any of these would be greatly appreciated.

I have the 4T60-E tranny

Re: '94 Deville ATF Change

tranny overfill can be tricky.... in fact just correctly checking the fluid level is tricky...so I'm not sure I would even trust the Midas dudes.

Did you ever check the GM manual for your car regarding correct fluid level checking procedures? Its not like checking the oil level.

Either way, if its overfilled, I believe you'll need to loosen the trans fluid pan and let some excess flow out. Just be really sure it IS overfilled first.

Re: '94 Deville ATF Change

Your probably over due for a change based on the year, if it has never been done. If it was over filled and has caused no harm so far, I doubt it will die anytime soon.

Just drop the pan, clean it out and refill. I'm not sure how much it will take but I want to say about 8 qts.

Do not let anyone talk you into a flush. Chech the Technical Archives in the upper left corner and read up on trans flushing.

Re: '94 Deville ATF Change

It's a little over 6 quarts when you drop the pan and change the filter.

I just did it on my '94 Deville about 2 months ago, nothing tricky to it!
