TPMS reset/reprogram no horn chirp/honk to start

    hi everyone,

there is a lot of info on here regarding resetting/reprogramming the TPMS but I haven't found anything to help me with this yet.

the dealership recently got a used remote, bought from ebay, to work on this 03 deville base. I had to replace the keyless entry theft module (ebay) before they could get it to work.

the display show -- dashes for all tire LF RF RR LR and service tire monitor. at one point I had 2 or 3 tires working but at some point, i think when I changed the keyless entry theft module, they all went out --. over the last year I have changed 1 or 2 of the sensors when I have the tires off so they are "new" to the car (at this point I think all 4 are "new" to the car).

with the key on (not started) I press lock and unlock for 5+ seconds and the horn doesnt honk at all. (i press them for 3 minutes, nothing)

question is do I need the original remote that came with the car to do this?
and this is a #2 remote do I need a #1 remote to do this?
and does the keyless entry theft module affect this TPMS at all?

any suggestions on why I can't even get the car to enter the reprogram TPMS mode with a horn chirp/honk?

    thanks!

I don't know what you mean by "keyless entry theft module".
But it's worth knowing that the TPMS receiver board is part of the keyless entry module (in the trunk).

There could be a clue or two in the stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Here is how to retrieve and display your codes; scroll down the page to find your model/year.

You should not be expecting to hear two horn chirps when entering the reset mode. You will hear two horn chirps when you have successfully completed the process.

    Here is the procedure;

Use a large magnet. If this procedure fails, try a magnet with greater flux density.

    1) Ignition ON.

    2) Press LOCK + UN-LOCK key fob buttons simultaneously until the horn chirps.

    3) Starting with LF wheel, hold the magnet in contact with the valve stem
until the horn chirps. Then RF, then RR, then LR. After LR, the horn
will chirp twice to indicate the relearn was successful.

There is a timer running that allows 1 minute between wheels and
    5 minutes total elapsed time.

On my 2003 deville it wouldn't start the relearn unless the parking brake was set. Mine does beep at start and after each wheel then 2 at end. When I had a tpms replaced Monroe only got the double beep at start but nothing after. I had same till setting brake.

Never heard of any correlation with the parking brake before. I've done mine without setting it, but is has been iffy. Could not get it to work until the weather warmed up. They just would not reset when it was cold.

And make sure that the magnet is sufficeintly strong. I started with a magnet from an auto speaker. It worked on 2 out of 4 sensors. Wasn't about to pay $20+ for a special magnet, so went to the hardware store and picked up a magnet that was supposed to be able to support 35 pounds. It worked on 0 of 4 sensors. Went back and got the one that was indicated to be good for 65 pounds. That did the trick.

FWIW, I always set the parking brake.

Re: TPMS reset/reprogram no 2x horn honk to start

thanks for the replies. thanks JimD for that write up. I had a bunch of codes in there. The only current ones seem unrelated... but they are all list below:

I see, so only one horn chirp to start not two. I must have mis-read. I clearded the codes using the DIC but still don't get any chirps, even following your procedure, with and without the ebrake on, so something is still wrong. i'm pretty sure what I called the "keyless entry theft module" is the "keyless entry module" (in the trunk). it is mounted near the center up almost up by the top of the back seat. I replaced that with a used one, which is probably what fixed not being able to program a new remote, the dealer was able to program it now. So I am pretty sure the different "keyless entry module" is why the TPMS is no longer working.

    any more suggestions? thanks

    here goes:

    http://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm

DDM B1327 History - Device Power Circuit Low
DDM B3069 History - RF/LF Door Key Unlock Circuit Low
DDM U1713 History - Mirror Switch R Down Input Stuck High
DDM B3832 History - window position sensor
IPC B1004 History - Keep Alive Memory (KAM)
IPC B1327 History - Device Power Circuit Low
IPM B1438 History - IPC High Voltage Output Overcurrent to IPM
IPM B0429 Current - Temperature Control #3 Rear Circuit Range/Performance
IPM B1004 History - Keep Alive Memory (KAM)

SDM U1000 History - Class 2 Communication Malfunction

I am guessing one of the communication malfunction errors is a miscommunication with the new "keyless entry module"? I will see what new codes come now that I cleared them.

Re: TPMS reset/reprogram no 2x horn honk to start

these codes have returned after I cleared all codes and drove a few hundred miles

IPC U1000 History - Class 2 Communication Malfunction
IRC U1016 History - Loss of Class 2 Communication with VCM and Loss of Communications with PCM
IPM B0429 Current - Temperature Control #3 Rear Circuit Range/Performance
PCM P0410 Current - Secondary Air Injection (AIR) System
RIM C0660 Current - Level Control Exhaust Valve Circuit Malfunction
SDM B0065 History - LF/Driver Pretensioner Deployment Loop Open

I also read this online and in alldata.
If the Tire Pressure Monitor (TPM) learn mode cannot be enabled, verify that the TPM option is enabled in the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR).

The keyless entry module and the RCDLR is the same part right?

So, I am thinking the keyless entry module I got from ebay was from a car that did not have TPMS. Like some of the other keyless entry modules that were listed were from Buicks. If that is the case TPMS is not enabled in the module I have. I'll have to find a mechanic with a scan tool that can verify this or again ask the dealer to look.

    good plan? comments?

Are you anywhere near Norfolk, VA? I have a Tech II that I can help forum members out with (not a mechanic, just a curious hobbyist)

Might seem odd but how is your alternator & battery, is it older or have you tried putting a slow charge on it. If its low sometimes it can cause erronious codes and malfunction s.

naif, thank you but I am about 6 hours away from Norfolk. purelux im sure a lot of these original codes came from a low battery. i was battling that a few months ago. it is good now.
    thanks
