Out of Town - Low Oil Pressure

I'm out of town with the car. About 300 miles from home and the low oil pressure - stop engine message comes on. Silly question, but is there a "quick" check I can do to determine if it is simply the sending unit or something more serious. I checked the oil level. About a quart low. After restarting the car, the message didn't come back on. I'm a shade tree mechanic, but do not have any tools with me or access to any. Naturally I don't want to risk ruining the engine but I need to get home as well. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

The only test is an oil pressure test, with a pressure gauge.

If the crank pulley/bolt has never been removed, I wouldn't worry about it.

NO - other than listen to the engine -

but - 99.99% of the time it is a failed switch -

Thanks guys for the replies. Nothing has ever been done to the engine so nothing has ever been removed.

Also, I pulled a newb mistake. Didn't post the codes.

Only code is p1617 - low oil level switch.

Perhaps the car set this message as a precaution to a possible low oil situation?

It is running like a new car. Smooth as can be.

Edit - code showed as history.

I am sure, being a shade tree this need not be said and I don't want to insult your intelligence, but don't confuse oil level with oil pressure.

No. That's not how the system works. There is no relationship between level and pressure.

Ranger - your help would never insult me! I'm just trying to figure out the correlation between the low oil level history code and the low pressure message. I've driven it locally a couple of times and it runs as if it just rolled off of the line. I'm going to chance it i suppose. But man, I hate seeing such a message.

Re: Out of Town - Low Oil Pressure

I once got the oil level message after having had the Deville jacked up fairly high up front. It was just a one-time fluke. I also got the oil pressure switch message. Funny, it only came up when going very slow or at a stop - as soon as I gave it a little gas, it just went away. It never came back after changing the oil pressure sending switch. AFAIK, if the message disappears after giving gas it's pretty much the switch giving up.

There is no correlation. Two separate unrelated sensors.
