    2004 DTS Hard Shifting

Hello my Name is Junior But everyone calls me Juni for short. I recently purchased my first Cadillac it's a 2004 DTS, a couple weeks ago it started shifting hard I took it over to my friends house because he lives in the area I was in we checked the fluid and it was very high so we removed as much as we could, after that it started shifting nice again. Today it started shifting hard again I checked the fluid and it was very high again, I let the car sit for an hour or so then I drove it home and it was shifting good again. Would anyone be able to help me trouble shoot? No codes came up when we checked, Seems like it could be a cooling issue?

Are we talking about transmission fluid?

If it's mysteriously gaining fluid, the transmission cooler has failed, and there's coolant in the transmission. DO NOT start the car, drain the transmission as soon as possible. Though damage may already have been done.

Yes transmission fluid, this sucks because I thought they might have over filled it at the dealership (my stupidity for assuming) but I've drivin it quite a bit since the first time the second time this happend was today. Is there anyway to know for sure of I have caused permanent damage?

Other than how it drives after you replace the radiator and refill the transmission? Not really.

If there's something on file about the fluid level problem, GM Customer Care can help out with the warranty issue.

    Re: 2004 DTS Hard Shifting

I've never seen a trans shift hard from being overfilled in any car.

If the cooler ruptured, the fluid will look like a strawberry shake & the trans will be junk because the clutch/band material is bonded with a water soluble glue. Is the fluid clean?

Could be shift adapts. If its driven on the hard side, PCM will boost pressure over time.
Disconnect batt and/or clear PCM even if there are no codes.

Also, TPS too high could cause. Should throw a code, but not always if it still has a sweep.

Not being drove hard at all. It shirts hard only when driving going from park into Rev. N or Drive is ok not hard just when driving. I parked it the trans fluid was very high let it cool for an hour then drove it home with no problems no hard shifts. The fluid looks clean (so far) could it be trans cooler going out? Or would it go out all the way at once?

    Re: 2004 DTS Hard Shifting

It was probably way overfilled to begin with - If the cooler (in the radiator end tank) has failed you would have a real coolant and transmission fluid mess....... strawberry milkshake in the transmission and puke colored, oily coolant in the surge tank.

The transmission is a dry sump unit - there should be NO fluid on the stick with the engine OFF
. Check the level with the engine hot, running in P on a level surface.

Car is cold as we speak I will check to see if there is any fluid on the stick, it's weird after the first time this happened, I drove to Spokane Wa about 400+ miles round trip and didn't have this problem then I drove it yesterday around town and it was hot yesterday about 95 degrees out I was doing 25-40mph around town that's when it started doing it and last time it did I had this problem it was basically the same scenerio.
