Would having the transmission fluid changed and replaced to the proper levels at a gm dealership with the current dexron help at all? An if the cooler is bad is that something we could do ourselves?

This was with the engine off/cold first idk if you can see but the tip has fluid on it. Would to much fluid make it shift hard? If so why doesn't it do it every time I drive the car? Idk if it matters but the coolant level in the coolant tank looks good if it was leaking into the Tranny wouldn't the level be lower?

It's still a tad high - with the engine running at idle see if you can use the ol' turkey baster and rubber tube trick to suck out another pint.

BUT - that little bit of overfill should not cause weird transmission operation - "hard shift from P" - Is this with the engine still at the 1200 rpm or the 950 rpm fast idle sequence ?

Transmission oil cooler in these cars = whole new radiator.

Could be a sticky pressure solenoid.
