2001 DeVille Wont shift out of park

have a 01' DeVille the battery died. a couple of days later I jump the car and it started up fine but when I tried to shift out of park the lever moves but the gear doesn't engage. I read on forums about a "neutral shift lock" or "orange Button" under the ashtray but I don't see anything but carpet... Where is the location for this please help.

I think the orange release button is only on the floor shift models. You are holding your foot on the brake, aren't you? That should electronically engage the shift interlock solenoid.

so you are saying you can start the car -
and move the shift lever to Drive -
    but the car doesn't move?

That's what I got out of it, too.
Coincidental but bad cable, linkage or broken trans. (if that's the case)

I start the car and when I engage in any gear the gear doesn't engage. like if is stayed on neautral the whole time... I kept hearing about the neutral safety switch. where would that be located in this model car

    ----------

also when I move the lever it just stays on Park... and the emergency brake wont disengage unless I do it manually.

Did a little searching and found several people with similar problem with 2000-05 Seville and sevilles. Internal mode switch also plastic clip on rod from aims to the parking pawl broken. There cars indicated computer thought they were in drive or 2nd gear.

Check to be sure that the shift linkage is still connected at both ends.

Doesn't the shifter move a little easier than usual?
I can almost feel it from here.

    Again-

the linkage is connected on both sides... I can start the car but when I shift gear the digital dash stays in Park.. and it doesn't engage in any gears and the emergency break doesn't disengage( I do it manually).. and the shift feels the same.

the car used to work fine with no problems.. one time the battery died and stay dead for a week.. I needed to jump start the car but I had no room, so I put it in Neutral and push it back so I can make room to start it.. I jump start it and after that the car never worked

Did you force it to neutral when you moved it with no battery power?

If you move the shifter out of park with the car not running, can you push the car?

Yes, but in order to bypass the shift lock, the key needs to be on "accessory" (between off/lock and on/run). Otherwise it'll break when you force it. Normally having "key-on" and stepping on the brake will let you shift, but with no battery power, this might not be possible.

when I did push the car I turn the key, press the break and it let me put it in neutral that's how it was able to roll...
I don't think I can push it when in park...

I hear a small click when I try to engage in a gear but the digital dash stays in Park

If the trans is coming out of park, but there is no engagement and indicator reads park, both the IMS & manual valve have become disconnected inside lower pan.

Make sure your range selector cable terminal(1) is correctly connected to the trans range selector lever(2). The trans range selector lever should move with your range selection with the gear shift.
