    A tap tap tapping-Tensioner?

click click click click click... Frequency increases with engine speed. Cannot hear it inside the cabin. Sounds like it's from the tensioner or idler pulley area. Don't think it's the new compressor or alternator.

    Re: A tap tap tapping-Tensioner?

Here's a thread where I recently had same question. 'Ranger' offered tips on checking tensioners.
    http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...-any-easy.html

    Good luck!

Kind of sounds like one of the pulley bearings. Try what I suggested in the link. That should narrow it down.

and I wouldn't even drive it around the block -
until you identify that noise -

if it is the idler pulley - it could go at any second -
    and leave you stranded -

Used the 1/2" pull bar to remove the tension from the belt, clicking went away.

Removed the tensioner, other than a little slop, bearing felt fine. Idler pulley felt smooth albeit a little sloppy.

Noticed the drive pulley (crankshaft) does not run true, probably 1mm runout (+/-).

Ordered new belt, idler and tensioner.

Dad has serp belt wrench kit. Have never used it till last week. Bar has a hex cutout and all the sockets are hex drive. I looked at it for a few minutes and thought my eyes were playing tricks. Hex sockets sure but hex drive? 60 deg rotation angle for bar. I used a 16mm socket on a external Torx head bolt. I did not have a E20 socket in my kit and the 16mm fit perfect.

It could be the idler as well as the tensioner. That's where a stethoscope would come in handy to locate the culprit. If the tensioner doesn't so it, you'll know where to look next.

ANY "slop" - any - in a tensioner or idler pulley is NOT GOOD - those should feel smooth and "viscous" when turned by hand.

Just for grins and kicks, ask to see a new one at a parts store - feel the difference between it and yours.

Ordered a new wp tensioner pulley after I replaced the belt. The bearing is probably OK but I feel the lube has turned into something other than grease.

I feel like if I keep throwing enough parts at the old girl the head gasket gods will be pleased.

Noise has re-appeared. Compressor clutch bearing. Hammers when clutch is disengaged, quiet when the compressor is running. Still cooling great!

FYI, AC parts are from Arizona Mobile Air. GPD manufacturer (China). Condensor didn't fit, had to return for refund. Compressor will be replaced under warranty (Do I want another Chinese compressor?)

I have used Chinese compressors for years on maybe 7 cars with no trouble. They seem to be well made.
