2001 DHS not starting, B 0429 code current

My 01 DHS didn't start on first attempt the other day then turned the key a 2nd time and it started. Then after sitting at work, it would not start. The relay was firing but no action from the starter. We made sure fuses were secure, etc and nothing. Valet key would not make a difference. I put the fuse covers back then bam, car started right up but the engine light came on. The only current code was a BO429 but the light disappeared when I started a few hours later and hasn't come back on for 2 days and car has been starting fine.

    Any thoughts?

B429 is back seat A/C vent, not your problem. Since you had SES light , you must have a P code listed as "history".

Misfiring cylinder - possible bad or loose coil or bad plug. But that would not account for starter not working. What shape is your battery? Voltage reading 1/2 hour after running?

The misfire is in history. The check engine was only on this once during the last 4 months and the only current code was the BO429.

I've read about loose shifting cables possibly bring the cause, making the car think its not in park. I've heard that bad starters are very rare in the Deville.

Bad starters are rare but loose starter cables happen. And bad battery or loose battery cables are real possibilities.

Did the engine crank, but fail to start or did it not even crank?

there is no such code - too many numbers -

    P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected -
but that code would NOT be available without using an external scanner -

and P3040 does not exist -

Obviously a misfire is not my problem. The starter didn't make a sound, no clicks, nothing would happen.

Then I'd start by checking the battery.

    P.S.
Please update your profile to show the year and model.

    Car and year fixed.

forsman, it is NOT a good idea to show your e-mail where the entire world can see it. You will (not might - WILL) wind up with far more e-mail than you bargained for.

How old is the battery ??? Any more than ~5 years and it is a prime suspect.

Still having problems here, guys. BO429 is the only current code w/ PCM PO340, PCM P1617, and IRC U1016 are in history

    Still having problems here
OBVIOUSLY cars don't fix themselves -

and I see you were able to copy the codes correctly this time -

P0340 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Circuit -
    won't cause a "dead" starter -
but WILL affect how the engine runs -

P1617 - Engine Oil Level Switch Circuit -
also won't affect the starter -
but WILL cause/prevent the CHECK OIL LEVEL message -

P1617 - Loss of Class 2 Communication with VCM -
also won't affect the starter -

    -------------

did you check any of the possibilities I listed in #11 ?

the cable at the starter solenoid is a good place to start -
