93 Coupe Deville 4.9 Ignition Timing please help

I'm trying to set the ignition timing on my car, I crossed the ALDL terminal A and B, I thought I've found the timing marks but I guess I'm wrong. Every time I move the distributor close to the marks the engine almost dies so they can't be the marks. Could anyone describe what the marks looks like? If you so happen to have a picture that would awesome. Thanks for any help.

Why are you messing with the timing? Once the base timing is set it should never move and the PCM takes it from there.

The reason I'm messing with the timing is my intake manifold gaskets went out and that required me to take the distributor out.

That is a good enough reason. Btw, the picture is to help you locate the mark on the damper. I assume you know where the timing pointer is located. Make sure you have turned off all accessories including the A/C. Any rpm below 800 will work.

Hey, if you have a pic of what I should be lining that mark up with I would really appreciate it if you send it to me. The only thing I see is would be ATDC. I'm thinking that the timing mark isn't at TDC but I just want to be sure. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out.

    -----------------------------
I believe the correct timing for your car is -
10* BTDC - Before Top Dead Center -
not After Top Dead Center -

the stationary timing mark looks like a bunch of teeth - /\/\/\ -
    although I don't remember which represents 10* BTDC -

Thanks for all your help. I know it's always set advanced but I was thinking the timing mark at the hub would be top dead center and the one on the block would be advanced. Guess I was wrong. Well thanks again.

1993 Coupe Deville pre ignition, pinging

The spark plugs have been replaced, I reset the ignition timing and went through all the steps like crossing the ALDL terminals. Is there anything on this car that is typical for causing a ping? I have to accelerate so slow for it not to kock. Thanks for any help.

Man, I cannot get this pinging to go away. The plugs have bee changed, I set the timing, and it's still having preignition. Is there anything typical on this car to cause it to ping?

Are you using premium? The 4.9 does not have a spark knock sensor.
Are you sure you timed it properly? What did you set the base timing at? It should be 10 degrees BTDC.
Have you checked for vacuum leaks?
    Is the EGR working properly?
    Have you pulled the DTC's?

    P.S.

The timing mark on the harmonic balancer is TDC
When you start the timing procedure #1 piston TDC compression stroke the mark on the harmonic balancer should be on 0 and the rotor pointing at 1 on the cap.
The block Vernier scale only reads advanced there is no retarded on the scale.

"The spark plugs have been replaced"
    Spark plug wires?
Have you checked the fuel pressure?

I'm sorry about that. After I made the post I've thought to come back and ask you, it won't happen again. I always use premium, I set my timing to 10 degrees before top dead center, my car is running a little rough. I thought it was doing that because of the timing but it still is. I've check the DTC's and found nothing so far. What's a good way to check the EGR?

    ----------

On my car the teeth to line looked like it was after top dead center, I know I was mistaken.
