93 Coupe Deville 4.9 Ignition Timing

I changed the head gaskets on my 93 coupe deville and it I had to take the distributor out. I put everything back together and now I'm trying to set my ignition timing. I crossed the ALDL terminals A and B with a paper clip and put my timing light on cylinder one and I can't line up the timing marks. The closer I get it to the timing marks the crappier it runs and it dies before it lines up. The lines on the hub is like 90 degrees advanced. It goes back to running fine when I move the distributor back from lining it up. I stuck a long tooth pic down cylinder one and manually got top dead center and the marks are on the right spot. Thanks for any help.

How do you know if the long tooth pick was on a compression stroke or exhaust?

how do you know the distributors is not a 180 off?

Because regardless of where the distributor is the timing light is going to respond to the signal. And compression and exhaust are pretty close to each other, piston position speaking.
