swap passkey and key cylinder (ignition switch)

hey guys, my key cylinder on my 2003 deville base model has been getting jammed for months, ive tried the wd40 and the graphite lube. banging is the only way to get the key to turn. i know, I know! That’s a Neanderthal way of dealing with it. sorry! i should have brought it to a professional....

but now I've paid the price. now both the key cylinder and the passkey are broken.

can I move the passkey and the key cylinder and keys from another deville?

and if so, does it require a dealer to program or will the set work with the different car?

    thanks

    AHHHH,

My friend you've crossed into the world of drama. But all hope is not lost. I had a similiar situation when I swapped a power tilt column into my base deville.

You are probably going to need minimum, the passkey theft detterent module, the ignition key that matches that module and the kicker ONE BRAND NEW mechanically cut key that hasn't been coded yet to resolve this issue.

If you have an extra pass key? You can use it to measure the resistance on the passkey. and just replace the broken part.

Everything from Post #51 on will pertain to you.

I do recall that on the early model devilles some ignition lock housings were plastic and then changed to metal. There was TSB pertaining to this.....

In the end I hope you don't need a whole column.....

When you swap the theft detterent module you will need the corresponding key from the same car.

Which ever car you take the parts from , you need it all. The theft module, the cylinder and the key.

THEN cut a new mechanical key to start the learn procedure.

Once the new key is programmed , you can program the exisiting keys.

i see, wow, thanks. so the existing keys need to be reprogrammed, even though they already once worked with the theft module?

Re: swap passkey and key cylinder (ignition switch)

    That is correct.

The pcm can hold I think 7-11 key memories. You don't want to use them all up because if you do, NOW you have to haul it off to the dealer to clear the passkey memory.......

    ----------

    Yet ironically,

The easiest thing for you to do is get a locksmith that can recode a blank cylinder to your exisiting mechanical coded key and then reprogram the new unlearned mechnical cut key to the car with the procedure outlined in my previous post.

That will save you the hassle of having two different keys for the car

    ----------

Unless when you go get the lock cylinder parts, you get the theft module, ignition cylinder, ignition key, glove box lock cylinder and trunck cylinder.

That's IF you want everything to match to one key again..........

Why not just swap the lock cylinder, and do the DIY relearn to the key that comes with it?

    Moist,

I had attempted that but nothing worked until I had a "virgin" key. Why? Beats me but thank goodness it worked.

Even then, he could get a used lock cylinder, and have a new key cut for it. He wouldn't need to swap modules.

May also want to check how much a dealer would charge to re key the cylinder. That way you'd be able to use your original keys/have 1 key for all locks.

Re: swap passkey and key cylinder (ignition switch)

hey, I got the parts, I found a 2002 in a salvage yard near me. I'm hoping the passkey from 2002 is close enough. the key cylinder and passkey 3 are installed and i hope to get a new key cut today. one other thing I'm wondering. If the passkey is disabling the start does it disable the fuel pump as well? I hear the fuel pump turn on when I turn the key, but I don't get anything from the starter.
