Convince me to buy 1999 Deville 79000 Miles

I am new here and looking for some advice. Loooked at a 1999 deville with 79000 miles mint body and interior. Tires need replaced soon. No plates so ran car in driveway for 20 mins temp settled at 1999 and ran smooth. Why am I so afraid of this car? Got dexcool in radiator but head gasket issue makes me nervous. I do not think the selller is trying to dump it. What else can I look for to identify potential head gasket problems. Radiator was full...I can probably get it for 4500. Listed at 4995. Thanks in adavance for advice.

Re: Convince me to buy 1999 Deville 79000 Miles

Read through the cooling system and engine head gasket sticky posts in the Engines; Northstar Performance threads. What does DEX-COOL have to do with anything ??? Until you know the cooling system and its operation inside and out a simple idling in a driveway is worthless.

You need to do a lot of homework on this car - actually, any used car. It's your money and you need to do a LOT of research in the Deville forums, the Engines forums, and study the entire Cadillac Technical Archive way up ^^^ in the black bar and go through Discussions, Item Specific: Cadillac Tech Tips for threads of interest.

Re: Convince me to buy 1999 Deville 79000 Miles

I bought my '03 DeVille about 18 months ago. It was low-mileage (55k) and body/interior were pristine. I took it for test drive, smelled a little oil, but didn't think much of it. Car ran perfect, so I bought it without doing much more homework.

Since then, I have spent lots of dollars and hours repairing this car. Replaced both valve cover gaskets to try and stop oil leaks. Stopped most of the leaking (and the smell), but still some oil leaks. Then I got the nasty P0741 code, which meant power pack (engine/trans) had to come out to repair/replace the torque converter and solenoid ($2,000 right there). Replaced battery. Replaced steering column (did this myself for total cost of $200, which was a bargain. Would have been MUCH more if I took to dealer). Replaced outer tie rod ends. Replaced all shocks/struts and tires. I just checked my spreadsheet (I track all costs) and my total to date is $5,615 in repairs/maintenance.

I really love this car. It's a true pleasure to drive. Not sure if I would buy another one though.

Good luck with your decision. If you are completely unable to do some repairs yourself, then I might advise against the car. Just my $.02........

From my research there is a general discussion on fhe type of coolant to use "green" vs. "Orange" so that's what dex cool has to do with anything.

Thanks mojo thats more of what I am looking for. Not trying to fall in love but I don't want to lose a good desl.

Re: Convince me to buy 1999 Deville 79000 Miles

DEX-COOL has been standard in most of the GM line since 1996. It is a perfectly good long-life coolant when maintained in accordance with GM recommendations.

ANY coolant turns acidic and loses corrosion protection when not changed as recommended.

Not snarky, dude - just matter-of-fact. Have you read the Northstar head gasket sticky and poll in the Engines; Northstar Performance forum ??? Lots of answers there.

Unless you have Chrysophobia there is NOTHING wrong with DEX-COOL.

$4500 is too much for a '99 - even in prestine condition -

with all the improvements made to the car and particularly in the engine -
    personally - I wouldn't even consider a pre 2000 Northstar powered car -

The '99's seem to be more prone to HG failure than any other year. Improvements where made in 2000 & again in '04. I'd pass and look for a 2000+.

Re: Convince me to buy 1999 Deville 79000 Miles

I paid $5k for a 2004 Deville with 107k miles. Clean as a whistle. Has so far needed two front wheel hubs, motor mount and a WP pulley tensioner. Wouldn't pay more than $3500 for that '99.

Agreed with this, esp. the price. $4500 is far too much really. I would not spend more than $2500-3000, and I'd consider it a "disposable" used car. I'd drive it until I got a blown head gasket or something similar. I cannot comment on the viability of the 1999 Northstars, but my 2003 has been a really good engine up to this point (130K).

If the only code you were getting was P0741, then it just means your car was running lean, and it could have been as simple as plugging a vacuum line back in that had worked loose, or it could have been a $30 plenum replacement. I just fixed mine (replaced a broken vacuum line elbow), I only had the P0741.

There are other codes that would have come up, I think, if you actually had a bad torque converter.

P0741 IS a bad TCC solenoid. A $30 part buried $2k in the transmission.

Thanks for the info. Kind of confirms my fears. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of the 2000 to 2005 models. IMO they look too much l like a Taurus. So now my search is for a steal on a 2006 or 2007. I am finding a lot of those with a salvage title....a lot for some reason. Thanks again for all the input.
