Slight ticking noise at idle - any easy fix?

My car ('03 'base' DeVille) has a slight ticking at idle. If I had to guess, I would say that it sounds like a lifter. I change the oil/filter more often than needed, always using good synthetic oils.

It's been like this for a few months, doesn't seem to be getting any worse, but I'd like to fix it, if possible.

Any suggestions?....... Engine flush? Special oil or additive? High speed run?

    Thanks for any help.

    Dave F.

Forget all that stuff. I'd use a stethoscope to listen around. Probably a tensioner pulley bearing. You can check that easily by putting a 1/2" drive breaker bar drive lug in the square hole in the tensioner arm. Pull just enough tension to allow the belt to slip at idle. If the noise stops, it's one of the components driven by the belt. The W/P tensioner on the drivers side uses a 1/4" drive.

Yep - don't need any snake oils or flushes, especially since you say you change oil/filter frequently.

There are 32 valves in there with their associated operating gear - a "slight tick at idle" would be nothing to be alarmed at....... and you don't have lifters - you have roller cam followers with stationary hydraulic lash adjusters. Not to say a lash adjuster could not have a slightly high leakdown rate - time to take the car out in the boonies and do some "spirited driving" including high rpm engine workout. (Hard to find "boonies" near Newport, and the local police are, ummmmm....... aggressive.)(The Black Pearl still at Bannister's Wharf ? - past ocean racer.)

Great idea about the tensioner. Thanks Ranger!

Sub, thanks for the pic. What keeps the roller cam follower from going all over the place?

And yeah, the Black Pearl is still there. I went for an early morning coffee cruise today and I drove right by. I kind of avoid downtown during the busy times though. Still quite a bit of sailing stuff going on here. But nothing like the good old days, when Newport hosted the America's Cup. I can still remember the entire town celebrating and filling up the streets with drunken foolishness when Connor and Ted Turner won around 1980 (Connor has a number of successful title defenses before he lost to the mysterious Aussie boat that had the infamous 'wing'). They used to pull that boat in the evenings under great secrecy........ I did a fair bit of sailing myself back then.

Cam lobe face flatness, the ball socket on the lash adjuster and the rails on the side of the follower where it slips over the valve stem tip.

70's and 80's - Spent a fair amount of time in Newport as one of the offshore coaches for the Naval Academy. Did some America's Cup trial boat work out of the old Naval Air Station at Quonset Pt. - starboard genoa trimmer. Did a slew of SORC, Annapolis/Newport, Newport/Bermuda, and Onion Patch work. Remember Jack King's Frers Merrythought boats ??? Was there ........ navigator. New England Boat Works and Newport Offshore......... Charlie Dana's (Dana Corp. - WIX) boats ........ fun.
