Just got the call no one wants.

I brought my 80k mile 2000 DTS to the dealer to check out the white smoke coming from both tail pipes this past weekend. I had a pretty good idea what to expect, but I don't
know everything there is to know about these engines so I was hoping the problem was something other than the head gaskets. Well, I just got the call yesterday and it is
apparently the head gaskets. The repair is quite costly as I'm sure you all know. I knew it was too but I didn't think it would be in excess of 5000 bucks. Anyway, I'm not going to have it repaired and am going to look at a potential replacement DTS today that is low miles, looks to be beautiful and has had the head gaskets repaired already. So I have just a couple questions to help get me through all this. What can I expect to fetch for my beautiful, dealer maintained, low mile DTS with blown head gaskets? I'll probably just put it on CL and see what happens, but what do you guys think of the value (if any, haha). Also, are there tests to check the integrity of the transmission of the car that I'm
looking to buy? Thanks for any input.

That's kinda what I was afraid of. What a shame. It's such a nice car which I thought I'd be driving for the next 10 years. Any idea about testing the integriy of the transmission of my next DTS? Is
there such a test that maybe the dealer can peform?

I am not sure how they would check the transmission other then driving it, checking for leaks and the fluid levels. Transmissions usually work or not. Auto transmissions are pretty reliable and if it works and shifts correctly when you get the car I would guess it would last as well as any. I suppose you could have them open it up and check a few things, but I doubt that would be worth what they would charge.

The car I'm going to look at today failed its last emissions test. Though that's not a deal breaker, that knowledge prompted me to to investigate potential causes of emission test failures. A couple of the potential causes have to to with some transmission components that are very costly to repair such as "the 50 dollar part buried 2000 dollars deep in the transmission" for one. Those are the kind of things I would worry about.

What part of the country are you in? I might be interested in your 2000.

I do not see your location.
There are some shops that know the NorthStar and can repair your engine.
I think the repair should be around 3k

$5000! Stick 'em up. Depending on your location, you may be able to get it done for around $2000.

Thank you for all the replies. I'm located in Phoenix, AZ. Perhaps I was throwing up the white flag a little too soon. I might have found someone who can replace the head gaskets for closer to $2000
    as Ranger has suggested.

It certainly is possible, and if you like the car (I THINK you do, you want another ) it's better to fix what you got. You know what you have with your current DTS. A new used car? Not so much.

$5000 for that repair is just too much.Dealerships, also known as "stealerships" here, always charge way too much for repairs.Often they have high overhead costs to maintain, which is passed on to the customer for repairs and parts.
Let us know if you find another mechanic/auto repair shop who can fix your head gaskets for less.

Just check with whoever is going to do the repair to be sure that this is not their first rodeo. Ask if they have done Northstars before. How many? And be sure that they are going to drill, retap and insert all 20 bolt holes. If any of the answers are wrong or they look at you funny........ walk.
