    -------------------------------------------
your car does NOT have AIR SUSPENSION -

your car DOES have Electronic Level Control -

a system that uses rear shocks with built in air bladders -
that are designed to raise the rear body of the car -
to maintain proper ride height -
with additional weight in the back seat or trunk -
    ----------------------

check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes -

if you don't know how - go here and read the ENTIRE post -

    http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...odes-dtcs.html

if you have any codes - post them here -
    ALONG WITH THEIR DEFINITIONS -

    ------------------
I expect to find an "exhaust valve" code -

rear shocks hold air... from onboard air compressor... might not be the most technical description but i'd say that qualifies as a type of "air suspension"

but aside from that... where is the ride harsh? front or rear end? does it still run a factory setup with the on board level control or manual fill rear air shocks that you just have to much pressure in?

Re: deville 1997 problem with Air suspensions please help

The rear shocks use air bladders for rear height control due to extra weight in the trunk or rear seat. The air bladders have no part in suspension or suspension (damping) control.

bumer686, Study the correct parts of the sticky post just above this thread - "How to pull codes". You car has it's own diagnostic code memory/scanner/reader already built-in. Several components of the ELC (Electronic Level Control) are monitored. That's your starting point.

As posted, assuming the system is stock, the best discovery would be that a control rod has come off a height sensor (LR or both wheelwells, depending on model).

Codes are meaningless with out their definitions.

    --------------------------------
i'd say that qualifies as a type of "air suspension"

and I'd say you were wrong -

the air bladders built into the rear shocks only raise the body of the car -
to maintain proper ride height - NOTHING ELSE -
the rest of the rear shock - the dampening part - does just that -
dampen the reaction of the spring -
in other words - it stops the spring from bouncing -

the SUSPENSION of the car - the part that supports the car - are SPRINGS -

AIR SUSPENSION systems replace the SPRINGS with air bags -
and the air bags actually support the car -
    ------------------------------
but aside from that... where is the ride harsh?
the OP stated the rear of the car is sitting too high -
and the ride in the rear is harsh -

that tells me the bladders in the shocks are overinflated -

there are several possible causes -
the most common things are -

defective exhaust valve in the compressor -

    defective ride-height sensor -

the rod connecting the ride-height sensor
and lower control arm is disconnected -

the first two possibilities should set a fault code -

which is why I suggested checking for codes -

and as soon as the OP supplies us with the CODE DEFINITIONS -
we will see what shows up -

bumer686, Use the link in the code pull sticky to decipher each posted code - then post each code, its definition, and whether each of your codes is Current or History.

There are almost a thousand GM DTC's - and we haven't memorized the definition of each just yet ............

Bookmark this link - you will need it as long as you own the car .................

we need the DEFINITIONS of all those codes -
without them - they are just a bunch of letters and numbers

Re: deville 1997 problem with Air suspensions please help

OK - none of those codes are related to the ELC system -
    so - now it's "grunt work" -

first - check ALL the fuses -
pay particular attention to those labeled ELC - or ALC -

locate the ride height sensor -

disconnect the rod from the control arm -

with the ignition ON - engine does NOT need to be running -

push the rod UP - this simulates a loaded trunk -
and should start the compressor -

    next -

pull the rod down - this simulates an un-loaded trunk -
and the rear would be sitting too high -
this should open the exhaust solenoid -
and you should hear air being released -

try that - and report back with your findings -
