    Will DEX/Antifreeze hurt the grass?

I got my new radiator and will be replacing it later today. When I remove the hoses will the DEX that makes it to the grass hurt the grass? Also how much, if any trans fluid will leak out when I disconnect the lines?

It will slow it's growth and/or kill it eventually. Are you not using a pan? Coolant is VERY toxic.

A small puddle of trans fluid will drip out. I close off the lines with vacuum caps.

Make sure you don't leave a standing puddle. Dogs like the flavor and it's lethal.

And then do what with it? Dump it down the drain?

No, take it to a garage or Pep Boys, they'll dispose of it correctly.

What do you do with your oil?

I haven't changed my oil myself in years. But I used to just let it stack up in the shed. The long-term plan was to move and leave it behind.

    I didn't know they took anti-freeze too.

You would be amazed at the amount of recycled ethylene glycol (antifreeze) sold today. Just about anything is recyclable. I believe that municipal landfills also accept the stuff.

.......... and yes, it will kill dogs and cats. Gruesomely.

Re: Will DEX/Antifreeze hurt the grass?

I have not been able to find anyone that will accept anti-freeze. Hell, most places don't want to take oil unless they do the oil change.

AZ take my oil, but not anti-freeze.

Pep Boys takes both, or at least they're supposed to. You can leave containers of oil, coolant, whatever, in front of one of the service bay doors after business hours, it's called orphan oil/orphan fluid.

Re: Will DEX/Antifreeze hurt the grass?

Maybe I'm lucky - living in a water-oriented area. Every marina has reclamation tanks for oil and antifreeze as well as a dead battery pallet. Because there is no "city" trash pickup, we consolidate our trash and take it all to the station - the county maintains recycling kiosks and tanks at the local landfill processing stations. Free dropoff of recyclables. The "come heres" (ex-city cave dwellers) pay out the nose for the big trash companies to pick up their disposables once a week.

Like Ranger said, AZ takes oil (motor, trans, gear)

Walmart takes oil and the filters.

I know Big O tires here in town takes antifreeze. I believe the dealers do as well, just not on a Saturday

Re: Will DEX/Antifreeze hurt the grass?

I have had no issues dropping brake fluid, used oil, and antifreeze at AZ, Advance or O'Reilleys. The latter made me sign in at a sheet with name and phone number for anything but oil. They told me they need that for droppings it off at the county recycling center.

Please NEVER EVER dump Or store antifreeze anywhere accessible to pets. Dogs and cats don't only "like" the flavour but to them that stuff smells sweet so they are actually attracted by it. My cat got very excited when I dumped a pair of latex gloves in the trash after unblocking the coolant bleeder hose.

I don't know about Dex-Cool, but the green stuff tasted pretty good when I accidentally got a splash in the mouth once.
Causes kidney failure in a few days if enough is consumed.

Check with the county. Ours has a hazardous waste disposal site here in town. It's free of charge. They take all fluids. They even take used oil filters (to be crushed to squeeze the oil out).
