    Speakers for 89 Deville

Well, my speakers are getting crackly. All of them. I don't even know what size I need to put in there to buy new ones. Does anyone have suggestions? I mostly play rockabilly music, so I don't need any obnoxious super bass crap, and I'd like to spend as little as possible to still get decent sound. Thanks!

Are you using a casette adapter to connect your iPod or similar device? If so, make sure your player's volume is not turned all the way up. Set it somewhere in the middle and recheck. If you supply a louder input to the amplifier it's not going to be able to amplify the signal flawlessly, and you will get crackling sounds.

    Hope this helps

I am using a cassette adapter, and yes, I only have it about half way up. They even cracle when I'm not playing any music and just have it on. Well, then it's more like a bubbling sound.

    Front is 4x6 & rear is 6x9.

IF yours has the Bose system there are amps (don't remember if its 1 or 2) that you have to bypass when switching to aftermarket equipment.

Thanks! Now I know what sizes to look for. I'm not sure BOSE speakers even existed in 1989? lol If I had a ton of money, I'd sure buy them now.

Bose was optional in '89. Your car doesn't have leather, it probably doesn't have Bose, which is a good thing in this case.

yup...GM started using them in 84 on the corvettes and they were available in caddys starting in 85 or 86? They were horrid junk though. No highs, no lows, and midrange wasnt great either. The delco radio with the 5 band eq and the delcosound 4 ohm 6x9s smoked the $1000+ bose system.

your car has 4x6 in the front and 6x9s in the back btw.
But if you are getting crackling through the speakers when no audio is put through them, chances are there is something wrong with the head unit (probably just a dirty volume pot due to age/ non use)

if that is the problem, you will want to spray the pot (behind the faceplate of the radio) with contact cleaner and work it back and forth

    ----------

for speakers, how much are you looking to spend?

Not too much. Less than 100 bucks total.
Contact cleaner as in contact lens cleaner?

I have a set of these (well mine are a different model number from 5 years ago) in my 83 lesabre and like them. the cones on mine have turned yellow from sun exposure though (car has sat outside in the sun for 5 years).

as for rear speakers, check and see if yours say 4 ohm delco sound on the magnet (have to remove the carpeted thingy that hides them in the trunk. Those are halfway decent speakers. You won't upgrade them for under $50.

Kevin, I'm getting ready to replace the rear struts. Gotta take the speakers out, apparently to avoid damaging them/allow room for a wrench. I've gotten as far as "the carpeted thingy." It's still held very firmly by the rear window trim strip, which has no exposed fasteners. Any clue how to remove that without breaking it? Seems like every time I encounter trim like that, if I just attempt to pry it off, something snaps.

    Re: Speakers for 89 Deville

fishnazi, I have a 1990, but I think that this part should be the same for an '89.
    1. Phillips screwdriver, remove shoulder seat belt trim piece near rear headrest.
    2. 10 mm socket and extension to remove bolt near the same place. The headrest is one, solid piece across the back seat. Lift up the cushion a bit and you will see the bolts at left and right sides. Headrest will just pull forward and out now.
    3. Gently pull rear deck forward. Slowly work it forward and it will come out as well...no fasteners.
    4. Speakers are fully accessible now. Just gently pry the speaker brackets away from the retaining clips. All of this stuff is plastic so be gentle.
    5. Do your strut project.
    6. Might as well put in some new speakers while you are there...most anything is better than stock...even going to Wal-Mart will be an improvement.
    7. Check your third brake light bulbs...easily accessible at this point too.
    8. Put it back together.
