    Alternator Voltage?

    1997 Deville.
At operating temperature battery voltage never gets over 13.8 volts (reading dash information display). The car has 98XXX miles on the clock. Is my alternator getting weak?
Reason I ask is the car is down for a new AC compressor, drier, condenser. Great opportunity to replace the alternator if I need to.
Service manual says 13-15 volts is normal.

    Did a search, nothing relevant.

    Your charging voltage is fine.

    Are you having electrical/starting problems?

No, but I removed the alt. today and not wanting to tear the front of the motor down again in the near future for replacement.

Leave it, could last another 100k. Stock units seem to be a higher quality than 90% of the replaements anyways.

    Re: Alternator Voltage?

If you have removed the alternator for other work, and it will be out for a few days, have your alternator rebuilt by a local electrical shop. Bearings and slipring brushes DO wear, and, as posted, you don't want to have to go back in there again.

For alternator/regulator operation and battery theory look through the www.balmar.net site as well as the Surrette Battery site.

A fully charged "12 volt" battery will show 12.6 volts when completely disconnected and left alone for at least a half hour. Automotive charging systems start off at a fairly high amperage and voltage rate; as the battery approaches full charge its internal resistance increases - the regulator senses this and ramps down the amperage rate to that necessary to run the car and loads at any given instant: Turn on the headlights and alternator amperage increases ........... BUT voltage is generally held at 14.0 to 14.6 all the time. This guarantees full voltage to all systems as well as slightly overcharging the battery to insure that any hard lead sulfate on the battery plates is driven back into solution in the electrolyte. (A heavily sulfated battery is useless) A fully charged battery will not freeze. A dead battery will, because then the electrolyte is almost pure water - the sulfuric acid is deposited on the plates as lead sulfate.

    Re: Alternator Voltage?

it's hard to argue with Sub's reasoning -

a little preventative maintenance on the alternator certainly WOULDN'T HURT -

and IF there is a LOCAL rebuilder
who would just replace the bearings and brushes CHEAP -
it might be worth looking into -

on the other hand - I would NOT recommending replacing it -
just because it is already out -
UNLESS you replace it with a genuine GM brand new -
or genuine GM remanufactured - NOT rebuilt - remanufactured unit -

the difference between rebuilt and remanufactured?

rebuilt - the broken/burned-out parts are replaced -

remanufactured - ALL bearings - electronics - "wearable parts" are replaced -

    Re: Alternator Voltage?

Found THIS on our favorite auction site, opinions?
I've rebuilt plenty of 10si, 12si, Ford alternators... Anything tricky with this Cadillac unit?

    Re: Alternator Voltage?

Nope ......... it's a GM alternator. Same toothpicks in the brush holders, same slipring cleanup, same clean assembly procedures. Get the kit and that lets you stick in a new voltage regulator while it's open.

    Re: Alternator Voltage?

    Ordered the eBay kit;
FIY, the "9" engine code and a "Y" engine code have slightly different alternators, also the cars with heated windshields have a different alternator. There are four different configurations of the CS144 in 1997 Cadillacs.
