Thanks for allowing me to join - 1997 Deville A/C and other problems

Just bought a very clean 97 Deville from an ex-renter. AC is not working (no freon) and suspect a malfunctioning fuel pump relay. Car drives like a dream and hope the evaporator isn't the problem with the AC.

Picture in the Deville "Pics of your FWD" thread.

Nice DeVille! Change the coolant, keep it changed every 2 years, and enjoy! These cars are VERY nice cruisers! Welcome!

Sorry Jfarr, you can only join if your parrot can do a credible Gilbert Godfrey impression.

Good luck with it! Evaporators are not usually a failure item on these cars, more likely the compressor belly seal.

Re: Thanks for allowing me to join the Cadillac forum

    So far the things I've noticed that need attention are;
    1. Intermittent loss of fuel pressure (occasionally, not all the time. Engine will stop and the message "Fuel system needs service") Methinks the F.P. relay. Ideas?
    2. Interior lights don't burn when any door is open.
    3. No AC. Message "Refrigerant level very low"
    4. Defrost vent grille broken and needs replacing.
    5. Cruise works when it "wants to".
    6. Slight rust issues starting around the rear tag surround on the trunk lid.

If anyone has experience with any of the above issues, I would like to hear about it.
Please don't tell me to find a good mechanic or dealership, I plan to tackle all the issues myself.

Overall I'm impressed with the car.

Overall I'm impressed with the car.
    1. Check the relay, and if it is good, time for a new fuel pump.
    2. Maybe a fuse? Check the convenience fuses.
    3. Sounds like the system needs charged. Grab a can at a local parts store and follow the directions on it.
    4. Junkyarding time!
    5. Check cruise fuses and relays.
    6. A common rust point on these old girls. The tag surround likes to trap dirt at the bottom, the dirt traps moisture, and BOOM. Remove the carpeting from the trunklid, and pull your tag off. On the bottom of the trunk lid, there's 2 bolts holding the tag surround on. Behind where your plate goes, there's four screws that hold it on. Remove those and it slides right out. That will give you an idea of what to fix. At the very least sand off the rust. I sanded the cancer off and, for now, clearcoated over it. Once I have more time I will properly patch the paint.

I like the spirit it you! Why pay someone when you can DIY? Good on ya! Good luck! You can do it, no sweat
