93 Deville "Service Air Cond" error

    Hi,

I just put my 93 deville back on the road after being in storage for some time. When I tried to use the air conditoner today I got an error (the service air cond light would come on for a min, then go out). I am thinking I might just be alittle low on freon; I know the system uses R-12. Does anyone know if you can still get an R-12 system charged, or would it be easier to change to R-134a? Thanks

You can still find shops to service R12 systems, but if the problem is low refrigerant, you have a leak, and that has to be addressed.

Ok, thanks.Someone told me that it is very easy to convert an R-12 system to R-134a; they said that after the R-12 is evacuated from the system, you just fill the system to 80% with R-134a. I know I would have to take it to a shop to have them remove the old R-12, but is this true?

it's a little more involved than simply changing the gas -

    google RETROFIT R12 TO 134A

Someone told you wrong. It is MUCH more involved and expensive.
