if the doesn't move it is on park. Check the trans cable it may yhave come the transmmission. It on the transmission by the brake booster.

It's more likely a bad shift position/neutral safety switch.

Either the shifter cable broke/popped off or the MLPS is no good.
Does the shifter feel looser than normal?
Does the car roll in Park?

    No, you'll have to repair/replace what's broken.

2000 4T80E - Does the OP's car have the IMS (Internal Mode Switch) on the valve body ? If so, it's gonna be either that, the shift cable guide and balljoint on top of the transmission, or the rod/lever (if the stick is on the column .....)

Good question. I can't remember at the moment but will look into it.

Just checked. Yes it is internal on the 2000. So much for the easy repair.

If your cable is attached to the transmission, Make sure the nut that sures the linkage to the cable is tight and the arm isn't loose.

If that is normal, your issue is internal. The pan will have to be dropped. There is a switch in there with a small black clip (that always breaks if not careful) attached to a small rod that tells the vehicle what gear it's in. The issue could be small, maybe the clip broke? Or the linkage from the outside of the trans to the inside of the trans has an issue.

All 00+ 4t80e's have internal mode switches. That's the main difference between the earlier designs with the switch mounted externally on the linkage lever.

Don't need one - follow the shift cable from the firewall, over the engine, around the large loop to the shift lever on top of the transmission - just "in front" of where your gas pedal toes sit.

^ This would allow it to roll in Park if indicator says D. ^

    This is the IMS:

    Drop pan, on valve body.
Is probably disconnected as stated in post #11.

(this came up on google while searching 4T80E)
    98eldo32v and 98eldo32v like this.
