1997 Deville looking for the ECT sensor

I need help locating my ECT sensor. I have a FSM and it shows me right where it should be. Instead of the sensor there is a threaded plug. I know the engine has been out of the vehicle and may have been replaced with a salvage engine. Is there another place for the sensor, maybe another year??

They're all in the same place. Why are you looking for it?

I'm looking for it to test it. I am still chasing down a rich condition at start up. I can clearly see where the sensor should be by looking at my FSM. It is a factory threaded plug. My source says the rear cylinder head driver's end and down near the bottom of the bracket used to pull the engine.

Yup, that's where it should be. I suspect someone removed it and plugged the hole. That may be your problem.

There should be a connector roaming around somewhere if the ECT isn't installed

Okay. If a sensor is unplugged, doesn't it throw a code?

Yes, I would expect to see something in the P0115-P0119 range, but if it ain't there, what else can it be?

Well, Ranger. I would bet this engine would not run well without the ECT and after it runs like crap for a few seconds it runs like new until you shut it off and wait awhile. The one fuel injector that I took out was as clean as new on the end where there should have been some deposits. I mean it looked as good as the new one. I don't know what any of this means except the fuel system is clean.

Unless someone installed resistors in place of the sensor, you wouldn't have any apparent problems. The PCM relies on other sensors to calculate fuel requirements.

All I can say is there should be an ECT sensor and there ain't. I would get one and install it and go from there. No ECT sensor has got to be wreaking havoc with the PCM.

Does the ECT sensor also control the temperature gauge? I have the digital dash and the temperature is always there.

Yes. There is only 1 ECT sensor in Northstars. Some vehicles use 2, or even 3 separate sensors (gauge, fans, PCM).

Okay. I believe I have found my ECT sensor. It took a strong light and a mirror. The next question is how do I get to it. I can barely put a finger on it.
