Have you checked the level in the tank, or are you just getting the message?

    Re: Coolant level low

First off, update your profile with your year and model so we know what we're talking about.

How fast is the level going down? If it's slow, you can easily have a leak that evaporated before it drips. Assuming this is a post '96 car with Dex-Cool, dried Dex leaves a chalky white telltale residue. Common leak points are a cracked surge tank or radiator side tank. Remember, the condenser is mounted in front of the radiator so you cannot see the front side. The two heater pipes on the back side of the rear head (impossible to see) are known to rust and leak as well. Crossover manifold gaskets tend to leak on the 2000+ engines.

    EDIT:
Didn't think to ask about the actual level. Could just be a faulty level switch.

Ok I go to profile and I am not seeing the additional info tab. I just purchased a 2002 deville for $2,300 from individual it has 113,200 miles. It was I thought a good deal knowing it is somewhat of a project. Anyway I don't mind getting dirty and learning to fix problems but I am not to sure on how to find the problem. Right now I have a coolant issue. I fill it up to cold line and every 3 days it goes back to the bottom of the bottle causing the low coolant to come on which is fine. I just got on here to get good advice and expertise. First how do I update my profile. Thanks

Low coolant 02 deville 113,000 miles

Can someone give every situation that would cause a coolant leak. I have no puddles under car and do not see any coolant or smell it. I bought it 2weeks ago and I have put 1 gallon. Drove it 200 miles so far back and forth to work. When low coolant lights up I fill it back to cold line.please help

Please don't start multiple threads on the same issue.

    Answered in your other thread.

You have either an external or internal leak.the first step would be to rent a cooling system pressure test kit from a parts store, and test for leaks.

there are only two possibilities -

    an EXTERNAL leak -
    or an INTERNAL leak -

to diagnose an EXTERNAL leak -
connect a PRESSURE TESTER to the serge tank - with the engine COLD -
pump it up to 20PSI - and let it sit -

if the pressure gauge goes down - you have a leak -
pump it back up to 20PSI and look all over 'til you find the leak -

if you have an INTERNAL leak -
it is probably caused by a failed head gasket -
the ONLY fix is a $2000+ head bolt repair -

Well is there a obvious sign of head gasket issue. It isn't overheating. On this model can coolant mix with oil.

Northstars do NOT normally mix oil/coolant due to a failed head gasket.

Upper right corner of the page - "My profile". Click it, click on "About Me". Use the little yellow pencil (click it) next to each field to enter/edit the info.

I merged your two threads on basically the same subject - keep this problem in one thread, please. It prevents clutter and you get all replies in one place. thanks.

Ok I did not have to put any coolant for 9days now. But today after checking the level everyday. It is low. And the display has appeared. So I will have to do a pressure test.

    What's that going to accomplish?

Ok replace tank and cap or just cap. What about the drain hose coming from the top is that the purge hose. A bad cap would cause evaporation I guess. What you think ranger.
