    check cooling level warning message

I've had my 97 DeVille about 3 weeks and driven it less than 400 miles. Since the moment I test drove it the warning message telling me to check the coolant level has been on.

The coolant level is fine, and the car runs at a average of 196 on the temp.

I've checked and cleared all codes but none were anything in regards to the coolant or engine temp.

Anyone know what is going on with this?

It's not uncommon for the float in the surge tank to get stuck. Sometimes it can be freed by removing the tank, filling it with hot water, and shaking it. If not, you'll need a new tank.

This is happening in my 2001 Deville too.

About a month ago I was riding through some heavy rain. I had an overheating warring pop up. It said to idle the motor. I did, the heat went down and never overheated. I've driven the car hundreds of miles since still no overheating or coolant loss.

For Randy1217, Same advice as in the many other cases of this in these forums - Either the magnetic float in the surge tank is stuck down or the reed switch ("sensor") has cracked. It's in the snap-in receptacle in the very bottom of the surge tank - as is the electrical connector - these sometimes fail, and the tank must be removed from the system to either clean it or replace the sensor (if you can find one without buying the whole tank).

Search through Discussions, Item Specific: Cadillac Tech Tips or Google something like "cadillac forums deville coolant level sensor" or something close. If you can't clean out the tank, check the wiring, or lightly tap the tank in the vicinity of the float, then look in Amazon Automotive for a whole new tank - about $60 shipped.

For devillin, Your "overheat message" has nothing to do with the "check coolant level message" unless you get both alternately.

Please read the 3 sticky threads on cooling, gauges, and fans in the Northstar Performance forum. The meanings of DIC messages are spelled out in the owner's manual - in detail. No owner's manual ?? Get one from eBay or download one from the links at the top of many of these forums.

no mystery there - like the others have said -
the float in the serge tank is stuck -

you can try removing and cleaning the tank -
or just replace it - amazon had them for around $70 - delivered -
and it's an easy 20 minute job to replace -
