    Brake problems

I have a 1990 Fleetwood with ABS. The brake pedal is hard to push and the ABS and Brake light are on all the time. Feels like driving a towed vehicle with no power to the power brakes. Pepboys said I had a bad control module so I replaced it but the problem is still there. Were should I look next?

First thing is to make sure the brake booster is getting and holding vacuum. There is a check valve in the brake booster(what the master cylinder is bolted too). That valve is Connected to a rubber hose which connects to the intake manifold. Start the car and let it run a couple minutes and pull that valve out of the booster. You should hear a burst of sucking air. You should also be able to feel suction at the end the valve. You need to check the codes and see why the abs light is on too, but most likely it's not related to the hard pedal. That sounds like either no vacuum, bad check valve, or a bad booster.

I don't think he can pull ABS codes from that car without a special code reader. I think they are separate from the OBDI system.

    Re: Brake problems

Ranger is correct on the ABS code reading. That will have to be done with a Tech I or Tech II scanner, and some limited other brands. There are also ABS test modules to check circuits from the computer inside the cabin to the module in the engine compartment, those are a dealer item can be bought used on ebay. If you are going to get into it yourself, a FSM will be mandatory.
