    Which Deville to choose ?

I have had my eye set on the 00-05 Devilles for quite awhile.
But i like the styling a little better of the 97-99 since it still had that Cadillac look.
I understand all the horror stories about the headgasket failures with Northstars.
But after owning numerous of fwd late 80's to early 90's devilles i want to try something a little newer and different.

What would you suggest i go for ?!

00 - 04 DTS - take your time and search for a creampuff - they're out there by the hundreds - but, as in fine examples of anything else, you'll pay for the one-in-a-thousand car.

If the deal is too good to be true, walk.

04 -05, with the improved headbolt (coarse) thread design. As mentioned above, you will pay for a nice one that is well loaded.

Re: Which Deville to choose ?

Everyone is ignoring the large fundamental characteristics of these two generations for a change in headbolts? If the cars were similar, I'd agree - but the differences are too large to ignore. Get the one that suits you best. The '97-'99 is much more traditional, classic styling, softer ride, roomier bench-seat interior (sans Concours). '00+ is much less traditional in styling, ride, and overall personality.

A '00+ with it's fancy new-fangled high tech head bolts (lol) won't make you happy if you really wanted a '97-'99, and vice versa... right?

If a 10-15 year old, $5k car is such a major spending decision that the possibility of mechanical problems down the road could make you sacrifice what you really want, or make your regret your decision, you're shopping in the wrong class! You will ALWAYS be disappointed!

That said, if you really must make your decision based on head bolt/gasket integrity, I'd say skip everything up to '04. Members don't contribute to the famous poll as religiously as they used to when the late '90's failures were at their peak, and it seems to me that the frequency of '00-'03 HG posts on the boards have increased significantly as the years have gone by, yet they remain unrespresented in the aged/forgotten poll. I feel they are just as prone as the earliers. That's just my opinion however, based on my own observations. Everyone will agree, however, that '04+ examples just don't pop up at all.

some '04 bolts were not coarse thread pitch

I'd shoot for 95-98, but that's just me, i'm not a fan of the DTS/DHS models, the older ones are way more stylish..

Go for whatever car you like the best. There are plenty of 00+ around that still had engine problems.

I prefer '94-'96 to '97-'99. I like the sharper edges on the front end, and the fender "skirts". They look longer and lower, especially the Concours, which actually did have tiny skirts.

    Drivetrain changes:
    '94/'95 base - 4.9
    '94-'95 Concours - VIN Y Northstar
    '96-'99 base/d'Elegance - VIN Y Northstar
    '96-'99 Concours - VIN 9 Northstar

Re: Which Deville to choose ?

So much good advice in this thread, but I agree... go with what you like but do your research. Learn from my mistakes.

Personally, like you said in the original post, I prefer the 97-99 body style, I don't like the pre-97 wheel wells as they cover part of the wheels. And I do NOT like the 00-05 at all, but again as others have clearly said, get what you like.
