    automatic headlights 97 Deville

OK, I have another question that I am hoping you all can help with.

The street lights are making my headlights go off at night (I got pulled over because I had no tail lights when the headlights went off). I have been through the owners manual and cannot find a way to adjust the sensitivity.

Anybody know how/if the sensitivity can be changed?

As always, thanks for your help!

Twilight sensitivity hasn't been adjustable since the '80's as best as I can recall (maybe the '70's). Pull the DTC's. You may have a bad photo cell.

And the adjustment was for when the older systems switched between high and low beam.

Photo cell is prob flaky, not unheard of they go bad. Easy to change out, until you do just put a piece of black tape on it. My wife's PA would do it once in a while if parked at light with bright street lights.

USUALLY - then the sensor fails - it doesn't turn the head lights OFF -

so your sensor is working TOO good -

you can try covering the sensor with some sort of window tint type material -
you might try simply drawing over it with a black magic marker -

anything solid would block all the light -
and turn the headlights on all the time -

You could always turn OFF the Twilight Sentinel and use the system normally.

If street lamps turn the system on and off it must be really flaky in tunnels, parking garages, and shade. Someone in CF recently had a headlamp on/off problem in toll booths ............

Turn off the Twilight Sentinel - they're an unnecessary bell/whistle anyway.

Not sure about 1997 guess you have DRL so you think the lights are on but they are not really
I have trouble with rain. Here the law says wipers on headlights must be on.
I think - The system should automatically turn the headlights on when I use the wipers.
On ours there is a green light on the headlight controls; if you look down and there is no green light there are no lights.
I usually just manually turn the head lights on.

My Chilton's (Yeah, I know Ranger.....I did find a service manual on ebay as you suggested but haven't bought it yet) doesn't cover the subject.

If, however, this is a new subject, can anyone give me the procedure?

For those of you who suggest turning the headlights manually, that's what I am doing now but, of course, none of the dashboard lights are illuminated when you use the manual switch and that is something of an inconvenience.

As always, thanks for all the advice and info.

Pull the vent off the dash if you can't get to wire clip pop the speaker grill out too. They twist or snap in I cannot remember but remove easily.

Turning the lights on manually works exactly the same way as any other car that doesn't have automatic headlights. The dashboard lights are supposed to come on when you do that. Unless you just have them dimmed all the way down that's another problem.

That thought crossed my mind, but I hated to ask such an obvious question.

Nope. The interior lights will only turn on if it's dark out. Went through that with my '97 SLS.
