    Weird problem with coolant temp.

i live in florida. I have noticed that my car is getting very hot..... will be fine at about 190 or so for about 20 minutes or so then will start to climb pretty steady to about 233 or do then will normally drop hard. Today it got up to 242 as i pulled into my driveway. I let it sit and went to 235 and no lower. So i turned it off. I then decided to turn it back on to see what would happen. For some reason in a matter of a minute when i restarted the temp droped to 210 and stayed. Im confused as hell. Havent checked my coolant level yet waiting for her to cool a bit. Any reason this would happen besides the head gasket? Just seems very odd to me how the temp droped so fast on me

    ----------

Also want to add normally drives fine. Its when i am stoped at a light fir to long that the temp really starts to rise

Re: Wierd problem with coolant temp.

Please read the cooling system and fan operation stickys down in Northstar Performance. All this has been covered in here, Seville, and Engines for the last two weeks - extensively.

The usual ritual - cold coolant level, purge line, water pump drive system checks, etc., etc.

223 -230 is NOT "very hot", especially with the A/C OFF or in ECON (depending on year).

Ok well how about this. Started my car and let it sit. Temp went all the way to 255.... decide wth... and oulled out pf my driveway. Temp began to drop. All the way to 215. Only started heating up at lights. I checked the fans and they run just fine. So im thinking must be a thermostat or something of the like... id like to find out soon because turning my car of at every light will be really annoying!

    ----------

Also sub i use the phone app. I dont currently have access to a computer. If i did id check the forum you told me 2. Going to chech the purge like. Noticed my coolant lines seemed ridiculously over pressurized. Could squeeze them at all

    ----------

    Ment couldent squeeze them*

sounds like it's time for a BLOCK TEST -

keep in mind that ANY color change - even the slightest change -
is a POSITAVE reaction - and that is bad news -

been discussed here a million times -
there are also several good videos on youtube -

Check engine oil to see if any bubbles as that would say some leak like maybe head gasket
See if any white smoke out mufflers when you get on it.
Also whats the water look like in surge tank.

Check by water pump to see if any fluid leaking would point to pump on its way out.

Give a good cleaning to condenser and radiator being blocked with crap.

    Possible the Tstat is sticking

Of course check for proper fluid level in overfill tank or pressure cap is not loose or gone bad

Possible the water temp sensor in block is going bad.

Northstars rarely mix coolant and oil, or produce white smoke due to HG failure. No cooling system problems will cause bubbles in the oil.

    1. It's a '99
    2. Temp spikes at idle and go down with increased RPM
    3. steam from the purge line.

Do the block test before chasing the wild goose.

Re: Weird problem with coolant temp.

My first daughter has a 2011 Sonata - drives over 45,000 miles/year as a restocking auditor for a store chain. It has been an economical, quiet, reliable car for 85,000 miles so far. I drove it for a while in '12 and was impressed........... and it is pretty fast and gets 34 mpg on 87.
