Re: installing fuel pump myself newbie 2003 deville help!!!!!!!!!!!

If the 2003 Deville is the same procedure as the 1998 Seville, it's not that complicated. The hardest part is getting the lock ring off that holds the fuel pump in if you don't have a spanner wrench. You can do it with a brass drift and a hammer, but it takes some patience and aim.

First of all, though, rent a fuel pressure tester from Auto Zone or another auto parts store to make sure the fuel pump is the problem.

:Yeah: Not difficult at all. The lock ring is the only "special" procedure, but as Tech said, a hammer and a drift should loosen it right up.

My ring has been rusty as hell. So, even using proper GM tool and breaker bar it took me about 5 minutes to remove it (even being strong enough). If your car hasn't been garaged during lifetime it will be pain to remove.

Spray the ring and the surrounding area with pb blaster or wd-40. Do the electrical connector upgrade if your pump came with it while that stuff soaks around the ring.

After you're done doing the re-wiring, clean the area around the ring with a cloth. The ring should come off easier now than fighting with it.

    Good luck.

When I did mine I didn't know about existence of WD-40.

    IMHO, WD-40 isn't a very good penetrant.

WD-40 leaves a gummy residue that eventually dries to rock hard. PB Blaster does not.

............... and MC is correct: WD-40 is a lousy "penetrant". Good for lotsa other stuff, though. Like waterproofing a marine ignition system.

Re: Installing fuel pump myself 2003 Deville

Just installed a pump on an 02.

    I had PB BLASTER.

The lock ring was rusted awful. I spent more time spraying the lock ring and waiting for the crud to loosen up than re doing the wiring and installing the pump?

Funny thing though, the original pump must have "swollen" on the tank.

It gave a bit of a fight coming out......

    Yea,

Most fuel pumps I replace seems to be swelled a bit and malformed, just enough to make it interesting to get out lol

I'll bet a few short bursts from a pneumatic chisel would break that lock ring loose in an instant.

The lock ring is the only bad part. Easy otherwise. Get a Delphi or delco pump and never worry again

I would suggest to buy new ring as I did.
