HELP! How to press the pulley back onto the waterpump. '92 DeVille.

The pulley came off the water pump which caused the serp belt to come off. I assume that the pump is still good because the shaft can be easily moved. I bought a new belt and put it back in place. Thinking that the pulley was pressed tightly to the shaft on the pump I started the engine. The pulley popped back off and threw the belt again. How can I press the pulley back onto the pump without having to take the car to a shop?

    :welcome.

Never heard of that happening before. You need a new pump.

They are seperate. If I bought a new pump it would be without the pulley, it would still have to be pressed on. Mechanically I suppose.

Sorry, I was assuming a Northstar, didn't notice the year.

If it's a press fit, and it won't stay on, the shaft and/or the pulley are worn. What did you use to push it back on?

All my Cadillacs I've done with the same type water pump as yours had a pulley that was held on by 3 13mm bolts, it is not pressed on. Are you sure it's the water pump you are having a problem with?

I'm sure because the pulley came off from there. The three bolts I see have nothing to do with holding it to the pump. I have been told several times its pressed on.

Are there any bolt holes in th pulley? If not like others said pulley or pump is worn and not keeping pulley on. Press fit should never back off.

    Is it a 4.9?
The pulley attaches by 3 bolts. The part to which it attaches is pressed on to the WP shaft. This is part of the water pump.
Replacing the water pump is your best course to fix this.

Take a look at this link. Post #5 has a picture.

A new water pump should come already assembled where all you need to do is install the round pulley (the part that the belt rotates around) using the 3 13mm bolts. There should be no press fitting involved.
It sounds like the first response from MC was the correct one!

Yeah, the pressed on hub is coming off, with the pulley still bolted to it.

Re: HELP! How to press the pulley back onto the waterpump. '92 DeVille.

My '89 had the same thing happen. The shaft of the WP broke. Luckily the pulley managed to not fall all the way to the ground and it could be used again on the replacement pump. If you do the work yourself, be advised that you'll need tools for regular/hex bolts, torx bits, and allen bolts that are METRIC.

I wasn't aware of the need for metric allen bolts, used a standard and stripped one of the bolts. Drilling that out was torture.

Re: HELP! How to press the pulley back onto the waterpump. '92 DeVille.

The only part that comes off the water pump is the pulley that bolts on. Nothing else is supposed to come apart so the only way to fix it is replace the water pump.
The part the pulley bolts to might be pressed on but if it came apart once on it's own it'll come apart again and you'd need to take it apart to press it back together anyway.

Yes it is a 4.9. I think that tackling the task of actually finding a way to take the WP out is my first goal. I have been told to go through the wheel well. To take the tire off and the hard plastics inside the well. Will that be my best bet?

    ----------

Thats right. I am going to get a new water pump but getting it off and then back on is the issue. Whicjh is the best way to get to it?

Re: HELP! How to press the pulley back onto the waterpump. '92 DeVille.

This is how I did on my '95. Different body, same engine - so no guarantee all will apply.

Remove battery and coolant recovery tank.
Jack up car, remove wheel and various plastic/rubber covers.
This should make all accessible. There are many screws/bolts/nuts holding that water pump cover on. You'll get to some from above and others through the wheel well.
When I did it, I set the new cover on the ground next to me. As I pulled each screw, I placed it in the corresponding hole in the new cover to keep track of where each one goes. You'll need a couple of sizes of metric sockets and a torx driver as well.

    ----------

Also - Loosen the fasteners holding the pulley to the WP before you remove the belt. The belt helps keep the pulley from turning while you are loosening them. I actually had to put a breaker bar on the belt tensioner and apply more pressure to the belt to keep the pulley from moving.

The 94/95 have more room to do the water pump then the older ones. I can do the newer ones from up top without going thru the wheel. Make sure you have a nice assortment of regular and deep sockets.
