Need some suggestions please - A/C problems

A few weeks ago the air stopped blowing cold and then smoke started coming out from under the hood. I was close to home so I drove back and popped the hood. It looked like oil had come out of the ac compressor and been thrown everywhere by the belt. The service ac light came on, I checked the codes and got the ac refrigerant low code. I can turn the compressor by hand but it wont turn if I try to run the ac. So I can't check the pressure and don't want to add any refrigerant until I know what the verdict is. I'm assuming the computer is preventing it from running as to not damage the system? Otherwise engine runs perfectly. My questions are:

Was it in fact oil that came out or could it be refrigerant? I thought the refrigerant would evaporate immediately, so I assumed it was the oil. It just seemed like more than I would have thought would have been in there.

Does this mean that the compressor is shot?

Is the entire system in need of a flush?

I'm going to do the work myself, then take it by the shop to have it filled. What parts are necessary to replace? The compressor, drier, orifice tube? Any suggested brands? I've heard that the aftermarket replacements are crap and go bad QUICKLY.

Anything I need to know as far as r12 to r134a details?

This will be my first ac job. Looks simple enough but things rarely are, so any tips?

Thanks in advanced! Any and all help is much appreciated!!!

Sounds like the compressor went. But in your case I think I'd pay for the diagnostic to see what it is for sure.

The refrigerant carries the oil. You blew a seal, thus the oil. You are correct in assuming that the PCM is disabling the compressor in order to protect it. It's hard to say what you need to replace. It could be as simple as just replacing the compressor and recharging it, or if the compressor failed ( as opposed to just a seal) then you may need the compressor, accumulator, condenser and a flush. If there is any debris on the orifice tube screen, then the latter applies.
