Wait 'till you drive one with the 3.71 final drive. Your car has the 3.11 economy final drive for highway cruising.

(These engines like to be "exercised" once in a while.) Read the entire Cadillac Technical Archive way up ^^^ in the black bar.

Re: Love the power of my 4.6

Ive been babying mine every since i got it. I just thought that that how you roll in a caddy, slow and low! ha!! Did my first WOT today on the way to work and... Wow! N*'s are awesome! and apparently, from researching on this forum, they need a little abuse now and then. They were designed for it and it helps clean the crud out of the fuel/exhaust systems. so Ive decided to add WOTs in to the schedule. Im stoked to know Ive got a justifed reason now to open her up every once in awhile!!! - PINK

It doesn't clean the fuel or exhaust systems, it removes carbon buildup from the combustion chambers, and from the piston ring grooves.

In my philosophy: more revs - more torque - big load on engine head studs threads - closer head gasket problem. So I never put more than 2000. Maximum 2.500 on highway. I'm babysitting my high mileage girl.

WOT/high RPM has absolutely nothing to do with pulled head bolt threads or HGs.

The engine was designed and built to be and be used as a high performance engine.

    Wrong philosophy.

You are prematurely aging the engine, building up carbon in the combustion chambers, slowly clogging the cat from too little hot gas flow, and possibly prematurely fouling the spark plug tips from too little combustion heat.

2,500 highway rpm is ~90 mph in your car - Jersey Turnpike ?

Nobody is advocating running the car hard every day - go back and read the Cadillac Technical Archive article "Occasional full throttle operation is good for your engine". The operative word there is "occasional".

if you have a HG problem a WOT exercise won't make it worse ... it will just bring the issue out from the shadows

Well, I confused WOT with full thortle. I'm sorry for that.
But when I said 2500 I meant startup on highway in order to be in a flow while car changing gears up. Not constant drive.
Here on turnpike we have 65.. so 80 you can drive freely. Just make sure you are in a flow.

Re: Love the power of my 4.6

that doesn't clean anything out - the cleaning happens as the engine coasts down while engine braking from the higher RPMs

the purpose of the WOT procedure is to wind the RPMs up so that you can coast back down
the getting up towards redline isn't as important as the coasting down

that's why you keep the stick in second gear (or 1st if you're going to be at lower speeds)
if you keep it in D then the second you let off the gas it will shift up to 4/OD and the engine braking that you are trying to achieve will not happen
