Coolant Temp Varies & Oil Pressure Light

    Hey guys, 1996 Deville here.

When I first drive my car each day/trip, the coolant will slowly climb to 210ish degrees going 60 mph. If I enter a slower area like 35 mph the temp will climb to 212-215 degrees. On the highway going 70+ it will drop back to 197-201 degrees most of the time. And if I am idling somewhere it can get up to 215 and rarely but sometimes 222 before coming back down when I drive. What's my issue here?

Also, when I approach a stop light after running the car for a while, my oil pressure light will blink on and off rapidly, but goes off as soon as I hit the gas again. It never happens until about 35 mins of driving. Thanks all, I appreciate your help.

Your coolant temperature is just fine. At highway speeds engine temps will range anywhere from 196-201. In the city they will range from 206-215, maybe higher on a hot day or in traffic. 222 is just fine, the cooling fans don't switch to ON until 224. Once the fans come on, the engine will cool to about 213, the fans will kick off, and the temp will cycle back up to 222-224 till the fans kick on. Perfectly normal operation.

As far as the oil pressure light, I would almost bet money that your oil pressure switch is going bad. Is your engine properly filled with oil? If so, get an AC Delco switch ONLY. Northstars are picky. It can be done with the car as is, but it helps if you have a socket for the switch (check your auto parts store) and it helps even more if the oil filter adapter is off.

    Nice year Cadillac btw

Relax. Your temps are normal (205-215).

Replace the EOP switch. Stick with an A/C Delco switch.

Engine temp varies a lot more than the gauge is letting you know it is. It's heavily damped, for just this reason..... many owners would think something was wrong if the gauge moved.

you have no issue - the cooling system is working perfectly -

my oil pressure light will blink on and off rapidly,
the oil pressure switch is probably old/weak/defective -
simply replace it - and be sure to use a GENUINE ACDELCO SWITCH -
