    new 97 Deville preventative maintenance

Hi guys, im new to the forum and recently purchased a 1997 Cadillac Deville (base model) with 104,000 miles that seem to have been pretty well taken care of, runs and drives smooth and quit.... I was looking for some insight on what would be some good steps to take to make sure everything is up to date on maintenance and preventative maintenance since i dont really know when the last time any type of service has been done to the vehicle

    Re: new 97 deville

Spark plugs and wires are due, based on Cadillac's reccomendations. Use AC Delco stuff only, Northstars are picky. Change the coolant yesterday, and DO NOT use any of the sealant tab additives. They are worthless. Other than that, replace and service as needed, AFAIK.

btw, and let's see the DeVille!

    Re: new 97 deville

Welcome, i have a 97 base deville also,,,basically just maintain all fluids and do change all plugs, put in double platinum ac/delco, do not gap them, they are plug and play, change the wires and antifreeze if you want....orange or green, does not matter on ours...you should be good to go

I edited your title. "New '97 Deville" is not very descriptive.

    Transmission fluid and filter?
Lift a tire off the ground - pull - push - shake the tire to feel for any play.
Pull the tire off and inspect everything carefully.

I've checkd a couple spots that are only willing to drain and refill the transmission fluid but not replace the filter...... And on the tires, remove the front? Rear? Or all 4?

The transmission filter is only serviced at total overhaul. There are screens that can be cleaned with a transmission pan drop. If you do a flud change, you might as well go to the new (2006) DEXRON-VI synthetic fluid - 100% backwards-compatible with the obsolete DEXRON-III.

The tire thing - with a wheel/tire jacked up, grab the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock. Attempt to rock the tire in and out - any play is hub/bearing assembly. For the front wheels, grab the tire at 9 and 3 o'clock and rock it as if to turn the steering wheel. Any play is inner or outer tie rod ends.

With the car up on a 4-point hoist, carefully inspect the sway bar bushings and the lower suspension arm bushings. Common wear points in ANY older car.
