    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

Well I got good and bad results.
Should have been; pull one distributor and drop one in.
That part went ok and it fired right up (I believed it was the the coil)
    But
    The timing has gone awry.
They second time I started it (you know after you button everything up and clean your hands) it did not want to idle and was laboring.
Working in a barrowed parking area between rain showers; i just wanted it home without a wrecker.
So i rotated the distributor like the old days until it would run and idle.
It came out way advanced but made it home under its own power.
Guess i will need to study up on the procedures for timing this motor ( Do you have a simple procedure for timing the 4.9 ?)

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

So I have the parts gathered to finish the ignition system tune-up.
    Got the
    #1 piston to TDC
timing mark painted and lined up at 0
    Distributor dropped in correct
Am having issues locating the ALDL connector.
Searched the Forum and the service manual.
Going to poke around under the dash to see if I can locate it.

Am not looking forward to the rear spark plugs but it must be done.
The front spark plug wire boots are frozen to the plugs so I guess the rears will be the same (lovely)

    ----------

    ALDL was easy enough.
Right by the emergency brake with a gray cover.

    On to the harder problems.

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

That was not to bad but it took me awhile.
Where the blower box has fell apart it has left the insulation exposed (would like to know of a way to fix that) it ate my arm up. Had to drape a towel down for my arm to rub on.
    It was a mess
The plugs were gaped/worn to 80 thousandths
There were some plug wires in the back that the vermin had gnawed thru to the core.
Maybe that is why the coil gave up; Trying to spark that gap with bad wires must have really put a load on it.
Found another bad vacuum line and another wire with the insulation compromised while I was back between the motor and firewall.

Jumped the ALDL A to B and got the "set timing" message
Got it timed to 10 degrees and it seems to be running well.
After I pulled the jumper on the ALDL I went back and looked with the timing light it was about 22 degrees.
Guess the computer knows what its doing?

Another bug reared its head when I got ready for the test drive.
ride control error popped up. It had the speed sensitive suspension.
On the test drive speed was limited to 88mph
Do I need to jump the two wires together that went to the factory shock to bypass the speed sensitive part?

    Well that was odd.
Went out to look everything over and the fuel pump just kept running.
    Found some codes
    PO 19 current
    Shorted fuel pump circuit
    PO 52 history
    PCM Memory reset
    IO 32 history
    Loss of ABS/TCS Data
    Nothing about the suspension.
It kept scrolling service engine soon.

Then after I threatened to dig a whole and bury it.
    Nothing
The fuel pump went back to normal all the codes went to history and everything seems normal.
Wonder if I can trust it.
There is something up with this car.
    Do I need a priest?

The blower box falling apart is very common. Someone here just got a new one not too long ago but most just patch them up the best they can with whatever they have.

The timing is normal. If it's running properly don't worry about it.

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

So i had our local exhaust shop replace the exhaust system from collector to tip.
Compact Cat into a Hushpower II for a resonator; That all fit before the first exhaust hanger.
Into a new Mid pipe feeding a Solo-Performance Stealth Muffler.
It turned out great! very quiet with a deep tone.
The results are very satisfactory for me

No I did not take a picture.
As I looked at it on the lift I thought I should have.

Is it going to be possible to put 95 Seville front seats in the 94 DeVille?
Seems to me it should work.

Re: What did you do to your car today?
Knuckle Bushings - both sides upper and lower on the 94 DeVille; them things were worn out..
Trying out the suspension max replacements (not cheap) hope they earn there cost.
I asked about them on the forum and got crickets; so I went for it.
There removal and installation tool made the job much easier.

Went to town today and the vehicle drove much better.
Am pleased with the progress so far.
Still have the timing gear cover oil leak to fix; but my repair list is getting very short.

This forum has been so helpful and supportive in this thread I thought I would ask a few more questions.
    > Idle is 675 - 700rpm seems a bit high to me.
    > MPG is 21.5 seems a bit low to me - our 4.6 vehicles get around 23mpg for us.
    > Cruising on the interstate I am seeing 2700rpms at 74mph the rpms seem high to me.
I looked at the codes in trunk and think FP3 refers to the drive ratio
    FP3 - TRANSAXLE,FINAL DRIVE RATIO = 2.73
Is this correct? am I looking at the right code?

    Thanks

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

So I went and got the seat out of the Seville it fits perfect.
    But
    The wiring is way different.
There are three wires on the Seville seat. 10 gauge at least power and ground and an occupant sensing wire (I think)
The Deville has six lighter gauged wires.
The motors and the wiring to them is identical.
Seville gets straight power with controls on side of seat.
DeVille gets switched power with controls on door.
Looked at the service manual and it just said all Cadillac models have seats.
Will have to dig for the wiring schematics.

    Is there an easy fix?

How did they do it on the concours?
    Is there another wiring harness?

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

    Crickets in this thread.
    Great

    Lets try the transmission problem.
"> MPG is 21.5 seems a bit low to me - our 4.6 vehicles get around 23mpg for us.
    > Cruising on the interstate I am seeing 2700rpms at 74mph the rpms seem high to me".

So we go to town today; i set the cruise on level straight; note the RPM's 1900 at 54mph
Pull the shifter to three - no change in RPM.
Tried manually shifting up thru the gears there was no change to 4th.
Checked that the dash indicator is correct - shift up to next detent - neutral check = the shifter is actually selecting OD
There are no codes and the vehicle is running great.

So where to look for a/the problem?

    Found this very informative

    But I am still clueless.

I have never experienced transmission issues (at least not automatic transmission) and I didn't know what to expect. It was EXACTLY like the fuel cut off when you reach top speed. Only that instead of the RPM to go down a bit then come up again and so on, this time the RPMs were going up a bit then coming back to normal. At that speed (~74MPH) the RPM was ~2700, I noticed when the car started to jerk the RPMs were going up close to 3000 then back to ~2700 and so on with a ~2 seconds frequency. Just to make sure I put it in neutral and revved the engine to little over 3000 RPM and it had no problem keeping the RPM high. This means the transmission was letting go (so the RPMs were going up) then grabbing again.
This brings me back to the hydraulic noise rather than bearing.
Needles to say after I noticed that I just nursed the car home avoiding as much as possible accelerating or breaking (so I don't have to accelerate again). My main concern was not to overheat the transmission.
So if there was any doubt before, now is 100% clear the issue is in transmission. Now the whine is permanent, in between shifts is not loud, it sounds like you would drag a bush over cymbals (when is not loud).
    Interesting.
    Similar but different.
Our 1994 4.9 DeVille 4t60e has lost fourth gear.
The gear simply is not there.
Recently changed the fluid and filter.
The transmission seems to function as normal other than that.

I noticed on an interstate drive that the RPM's seemed high.
Last trip to town i watched the rpm's and speed closely while trying different things to determine if anything else was happening, no other abnormalities were noted.

    Learned from this thread.
