    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

Trying to understand it as i try to conquer its bugs.
These affordable older ones always come with issues.
Guess that is half the fun

Still would like to know what all those coolers are.
Maybe while i am rooting around in there i can trace some of them.

Looks like everything on the drive belt end is shot except the alternator and the A/C compressor.
The power steering pump may pass inspection. But while i am there i will just change it.

    Thanks for checking on me

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

It sounds like you have identified all the coolers already, but here they are:

    Radiator, Pass side: Trans fluid
    Radiator, Driver side: Oil cooler
Cooler in front of radiator: power steering fluid

    ----------

Keep in mind, if the trans fluid or oil coolers are leaking at the radiator connection, don't try to fix it by tightening them. There is a rubber O-ring inside the connection that can be replaced. These connections should not be torqued too tight, or you will damage the fittings.

Those hoses also go bad with age. I have a leak from one of them right now. The other half of it that goes from under the air filter to the oil filter housing already had to be changed a few years ago.

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

Did the water pump - lower radiator hose - tensioner and idler pully with new belt today.
Was not to bad of a job. All the bolts were loose and the cardboard gasket had failed.
Took some pictures and notes as there does not seem to be a lot of info about the task.
If i can figure out how to post pictures i may do a write up.

Going to put the power steering pump off and see how it does. I did not see a lot of power steering leakage (just some).
I did notice someone did an intake manifold job on it and it has puked the end gasket out
have to put that on my list of things to keep an eye on.

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

Was over on the drivers side today.
    > Someone tried to seal the thermostate housing with gasket in a tube
    > Found some wiring things - one wire to the transmission was hanging on by one strand (fixed it).
    > Replaced several deteriorating vacuum lines.
    > cleaned the throttle body

    Two problems
    > Changed out the headlight switch unit to try and get the trunk release switch to work (it failed)
    Still working with remote.
    > Noticed a threaded hole in the top of the transmission about 11mm
Any idea what suppose to go there?

    Maybe some other things completed
The oil cooler hoses should be here tomorrow

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

Well i got all that done
    Turned out well.
    But
    Started flushing the cooling system.
About 70f outside temp - Set the interior temp to 90f to get some flow thru the heater core.
    And got high A/C
The harder i tried to get it to think i was freezing to death, the more it insisted we were roasting in a desert.
    What's up with that?
Going to take it to town tommorow and see what it does.

    Color me confused
Maybe it thought it needed max dehumidify?

There is probably another issue at work here, but if you set the control on "econ" instead of "auto", it won't run the A/C.

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

So we went to town today.
It is 50 miles one way
Going it struggled to figure out what to do.
After a few re-starts around town; the return trip it about has it's job figured out.
Maybe after having the battery disconnected for repairs it had to re-learn something?

Was reading in another thread about teaching it.
Also read in the manuals there are things you could get it to do.
And something about it remembering what you like.

    I must be getting old
    Dang thinking cars!

    Thanks for checking on me

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

    Ok so now.
    1994 Deville 4.9
    No codes
    Radiator cooling fans quit
    A/C compressor quit
    Hardly any heat from heater
    Load leveling not functioning

I have checked all fuses - Ran onboard diagnostics - checked all relays - traced and tested the wiring - checked heater core hoses for flow and temp.
The A/C and fans were working fine the other day.
I think i have run out of ideas.

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

I am running down the diagnostic trees
So far A/C and fans indicate PCM failure

Wish i had a better clue

Went thru the diagnostic tree everyway possible.
I got to open ckt refrigerant high and low (dark green) wire.
Fooled around with the wires awhile and.
    Have A/C and cooling fans.
    YAY!
    Me

    On to the other issues.
Think i will try the load leveling problem

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

Well that was not real helpful
    http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...ompressor.html
I got under it and found the wire loom to it
Could not get full battery voltage at the connector or a decent picture map of what the pins are supposed to do.
So i weent over and poked around the compressor; all the exhaust hoses had failed. It did not look like the compressor has run in a long timeSo i dig in the trunk for the relays.
They do not match the pictures ether and i could not determin which relay goes to the compressor.

    So?
Guess i will pull a compressor off the parts mobile and see what happens.

Fixed the fuel door release and got the trunk release switch working

Maybe tomorrow i can try that drivers door lock actuator.

Kind of dragging my feet on that air compressor.

    Re: I have issues - 1994 Deville 4.9

I figured since the drivers power door lock actuator was not working at all when we got the car, and the first cleaning got it working but weak; i would try that again.
So armed with a can of contact cleaner and a can of silicone lubricant i went to town on it.
Everything that moved was cleaned then lubed.
    Put it all back together.
    And........
    Success

I have thought about the rear suspension and the parts mobile.
Figured the parts mobile has 240,000 miles on it, this Deville seems like it may have another 100,000 miles left in it; i would just do right.
I orderd a new compressor and shocks.
Selected Arnott compressor and Monroe shocks.
    Not too expensive.

I really like that Cadillacs are made from mostly common parts.
It makes availability and price of parts almost a pleasure.

Hope i can find a picture of what each of the four compressor wires does.
