True or false: must get Cat from dealership only?

Iv'e been having a P0420 code and remember the mech telling me i have a bad cat. Ive read that I should NOT get AM cats because after the SES light goes away after the install, it lights back up soon after. I was told that my best bet would be to get a cat from the dealership. I dont know what price im looking at but by the looks of it, around $300 or so. So, fact or fiction?

Unless you can find an aftermarket cat that is certified for CA emmissions (and I can't from the major chains here in TX I looked for you yesterday) then yes you'll have to get a GM cat. And I looked at that also and it's $2250-$2430 list price depending on which engine you have, 9 or Y. That's a fact. Wholesale is only about 15% off that. If I were you I'd be calling the mom and pop muffler shops and seeing who'll install a CA cat with a guarantee for the best price. If you install your own and it doesn't pass your left holding the bag of woe.

$300 for a CAT from a dealer? FALSE! Probably closer to $1500 - $1800. (GMpartsgiant lists it for $1800). Might check with Chris (Rippy) over there >>>>>>>>>

"Universal" means "We weld it in and hope it works".
"Direct fit" means "We bolt and weld it in and hope it works".

Take a look in the Eastern Catalytic or RockAuto sites.

California is the state that finds things that "are known to cause cancer" or harm humans in every kind of food, drink, material, and air - and the fed believes them, so California is largely responsible for elevated pricing on everything from toothpicks to airplanes. Which means that if the cat is "CA certified" it will pass any state, territory, country, or planet emissions regulations now and in 2234.

Re: True or false: must get Cat from dealership only?

Im looking at a Walker, its running me $168 from autozone. the only thing I find weird is the wording on this, "Ultra universalUltra Converter, Federal and California Emissions models. Not legal for sale on vehicles licensed in the state of California." The other one for $348.99 but comes with the 4 bolt welded flange. Im thinking of getting that one. I just, like you said Sub, "hope it works". I think it will solve the issue because that loud whine by the driver side front tire was bad and recently replaced it which I feel was one of 2 reasons why the cat failed. The other was a bad coil causing a misfire. I may just go ahead and get the Walker Cat for $348.99 . What do yall think?

Re: True or false: must get Cat from dealership only?

Your original cat is part of the entire one-piece exhaust system. To replace the whole thing would be about $1500 if you can find one. Not many places have entire exhaust systems lying around.

The 4-bolt flange cat is your replacement piece - it is attached to a flange/gasket/bolts at the flex joint, forward end, and welded into the (cut off) exhaust pipe just forward of the resonator. In that cat for your car there's also an O2 sensor bung just after-cat.

Yes . The problems that the walker has and eastern is that they are small they are are direct fit but if put them next to the oem one they look small.

Re: True or false: must get Cat from dealership only?

Thanks for the heads up. I was willing to spend a bit more money on a product that seemed to be better due to the price and brand. Guess not everything thats expensive with a good name will last

Re: True or false: must get Cat from dealership only?

The Walker and Eastern units are the cat only - the OEM resonator stays. The CATCO replaces both cat and resonator, is 5 feet long, so it looks "bigger".

Re: True or false: must get Cat from dealership only?

No idea on that - never heard of (or looked for) BOSAL. If it's essentially identical, they may be one and the same. I have seen CATCO product (NOT Cadillac) as well as Eastern and Walker.

Hmmmm ............... looks like BOSAL is an international aftermarket parts manufacturer. Website.

If grullon10 has successfully used the CATCO on a 2001 Deville, then go for it.
