Re: Fluctuating 2001 Deville fuel gauge problem

They are designed to do that. It drops as gas is used and rises as gas is added. These fluctuations are normal and nothing to be concerned about.

They will probably move this to the proper forum so someone can help you more. Welcome though.

I believe it's the sensor that is messed up, and from what I've read you have to replace the whole fuel pump? Not sure though.

Re: Fluctuating 2001 Deville fuel gauge problem

I don't know if this is a common problem on the '01, but on some cars, the baffles in the tank come loose, allowing fuel to slosh around as you turn, go uphill, etc.
Do you notice the fluctuations as you move, or does it happen also at a standstill?

The baffle problem was in the early '90's Devilles.

Re: Fluctuating 2001 Deville fuel gauge problem

    Vtech,

My 2001 DTS has this same problem:
    - Fuel Guauge stays on F until there is less than a quarter tank
    - Fuel Guage drops to E when there is less than a quarter tank
    - Fuel Guage is not at all a reliable indicator of fuel level
    - Driver must use "gal of fuel used" display on dash board to determine fuel level
    - Driver must do math to subtract from 18.5 gal tank
    - Driver must reset "gal of fuel used" display when filling gas tank

Its a pain in the but and wish it was fixed!

Re: Fluctuating 2001 Deville fuel gauge problem

ONE of the problems affecting fuel gauge readings is sulfur deposits on the resistance slider on the fuel pump assembly: The gauge sender is attached there. (Pictures in my albums)

A fix attempt - before spending big bucks on a new pump assembly - is to find a 20 oz. jug of Chevron TECHRON and use it with a fill-up of Top Tier gasoline (Google it). TECHRON is a powerful fuel system cleaner and is designed to remove sulfur deposits. Once in 5,000 miles !!!

Techron doesnt help the only thing you can do is buy a new fuel pump from Rock Auto (best price) take it to your mechanic he will drop the tank and install the new pump. I know I tried the techron bit and replacement was the only option. Been there done that.. And no I dont work for rock auto..

Techron is a possible fix, IF the problem is sulfur buildup. Read post #7.

take it to your mechanic he will drop the tank and install the new pump.
There's an access panel in the trunk on '00+ Devilles.

I don't put much faith in that Techron either. Just replaced my youngest daughters car due to an accident. Gas gauge was a bit "sticky". I thought OK, what the hell. Against my better judgment I'll give it a shot. No change (not that any was expected).

I had same problem , Techron did not fix it but it is worth a try . I went on eBay and purchased a brand new GM level and pump for 100 dollars . I am not a mechanic but the install is not hard to do , i have an 03 deville and you do not have to drop the tank . You access it through the trunk floor .
