Key stuck in ignition in my 2001 DTS

2001 DTs: Key stuck in ignition: Story is: car went into shop for a water pump replacement; that problem fixed. Mechanic asks whats the trick w my key? WHAT trick? Seems the key is stuck, cannot be removed. AND the gas gauge is on E and get read-outs on the panel service transmission and service elecrtical system. Go home and I start looking for a solution on "the Forums". Found the access hole under the steering colunm. Still does not fix the problem with the key though. read more about maybe the ECM needs to be reset? Couldn't find the exact word on the fuses, found fuse #'s 8 and 19. Did the five minute removal thing on each. Didn't work. (Past problem with shifter: found the access panel /coin change area/ with the orange cable.) Right now car shifts fine. Car is able to be driven. What's with the key???? I can't use a screwdriver forever.

    Thanks,
    Summit Girl

read the SHIFT LOCK RELEASE section in your Owners manual -
starting on page 2-36 - that may help -

if you don't have the Owners Manual -
follow this link for a free down-loadable copy -

Re: Key stuck in ignition in my 2001 DTS

Sorry, psummit, for the insensitive reply you got. I had the exact same problem with my 01 DTS. In my case the problem was with one of the integration modules (computers). It was getting confused and refusing to release the solenoid that lets the key twist to the Lock position when you shift into Park.

If you had the patience to let the car sit long enough you would wake to find the car's battery completely dead. When you jump start the car this module will reboot and behave well until the next time it gets confused. It wasn't until the third time I had this problem, and was able to drive the car into the dealer's service bay while the car was exhibiting the problem, that the dealer actually believed me and had reason to fix what they had believed to be a phantom problem.

Rest assured that it will do you no good to RTFM again. I will try to remember to dig up the paperwork from when I had this problem and tell you the name and part number of the offending module.

Did I miss some name calling or something?

I would agree with "short reply" but insensitive?

    are you SERIOUS? -

if you noticed - the original post is from JANUARY -
I'm sure the problem has been solved by now -
    ----------------------

the reason for the "short reply" -

    FIRST -
it is NOT an uncommon problem with the DTS model Deville -
and others who search for this problem -
will find a quick and succinct solution - right at their fingertips -

SECOND - there are 2 columns of instructions -
    along with some illustrations -
that I couldn't include in my response here -

    and you will notice
that I also included a link to a downloadable copy of the Owners Manual -
in the event the OP didn't have the Owners Manual -

I don't know what else you expect -

NO ONE simply said - or suggested to RTFM -

and notice no other forum members thought it necessary
to expand on my original response -

    I accept YOUR apology -

    ----------

Re: Key stuck in ignition in my 2001 DTS

The OP asked why she could not remove the key from the ignition switch, yet the first reply "taught" her how to move the shifter out of park. I am also surprised that nobody else noticed the error in all this time.

    -------------------------

there was no error - mistake - or oversight -
I posted the VERY BEST ANSWER that could be given - PERIOD -

    SHIFT LOCK RELEASE
is the TITLE of that SECTION of the Owners Manual -
    on page 2-36

if you read the section I identified in the Owners Manual -
you would have seen this - as copied from that section - page 2-37:
    --------------------

The following procedure allows the ignition to be turned
to OFF and for key removal in case of a dead or low
    voltage battery.

and it goes on to explain the procedure - including illustrations -
    --------------------------

this section contains ALL the information the OP needed to remove the ignition key -

    -----------------------------

as I said above - I accept your humble apology -
