    Unhappy96 Deville Stuck in 2nd gear

    My 96 Deville will shift from park to reverse to neutral but no matter what drive gear you put it in its in 2nd and never up shifts or down shifts but will go into passing gear??? Any help would be appreciated

    Two words....shift solenoids. Search the forum for past posts using the search feature in the toolbar. Type "shift soleniods" into the drop down box. Read up.

    2nd gear is the hydraulic default for the trans if the shift solenoids go away. They are in the bottom pan of the trans and relatively easy to access with the trans in the car. Remove the bottom pan, remove the valve body to the bench. Split the valve body to R&R the solenoids and reinstall the valve body and pan.

    There are other things that could cause the trans to default to 2 but this is the most likely item by far.
