    1998 Deville won't start PASSKEY/VATS problem

    Hi Guys,

Went back to my car from the grocery store, and it wouldn't start. Display reads "starting disabled remove key" Wife drove 20 miles to town to bring me the spare key which is still like new, and it still won't start. Obviously the pellets/key are not the problem.
    Codes are:
    B2870: PASSKEY open/shorted pellet
    B2750: PASSKEY data communication failure

Googled it and it sounds like this a very common problem in older GM products. Found a website Newrockies Inc. that sells a complete PASSKEY VATS bypass.....I am thinking this is most likely the simplest and cheapest fix. I don't need a security system, I live out on the farm and don't go into the city very often. If someone really wants to steal my car, I'm sure they could get around that system anyways. I just want it to start when I need it to. It's not much good to me sitting there in the grocery store parking lot now. And I don't want to have it towed to the Cadillac dealer 50 miles away and get a $1000 or $1500 bill to fix it. Any suggestions and or advice are much appreciated. Does anyone have experience with installing this bypass product? TIA
    Derek

    Re: 1998 Deville won't start PASSKEY/VATS problem

Had the same problem with my 97. ended up fixing it myself for under $20. What happens is the wire in the steering wheel column, that reads the resistance of the"chip" in ur key, disconnects or becomes damaged from turning the wheel. first youll need an Ohm meter (used to measure voltage, got mine at menards) u need to use this to measure the resistor in ur key or the chip, buy placing ur key in a vice and touching a tong from the ohm meter to each side of the chip.
Now u will need to go to radioshck and buy some restiors connect them together to equal the resistance of your key. Take apart the dash under the steering column and cut the orange wire. Ull need to connect one end of ur resistor to oneend of the orange wire and the other end to the otjer side of the wire. This will bypass the security system, if u measured the resistance correctly. I found most of this info on google, and youtube. Hope it helps

I got a response from Newrockies saying their bypass does work on my year and model of car....they are working on a solution for it.
Thanks for your response......not looking forward to tackling this myself as you have described, but I guess I may have no choice.
