Unhappy Replaced The Water Pump, Now White Exhaust?

The water pump in my 89 Deville was leaking terribly, so we replaced it Monday but have had copious amounts of white exhaust since then. Some googling has told me that it could be from a faulty water pump, which would suck, especially because my mechanic is out of town for the next week.

I'm relatively mechanically inclined - is this something that I can check out myself, or is it something that's going to need replaced?

A water pump cannot cause the engine to consume/burn coolant. Does the "smoke" have any smell to it? A sweet smell? Does it smell of gas?

It smells a bit like gas, not terribly so. Not particularly sweet.

Like raw gas, or just like exhaust? Are you sure it's not just condensation?

Raw gas, yes. It's not really strong, but it is noticeable. I'm fairly sure it's not condensation, based on the amount - we're talking, if you stop at a stop sign there are times where you can barely see behind you. The head gaskets were checked (along with a ton of other stuff) when I last took it in for an oil change because I knew we had a leak but didn't know if it was the water pump or the radiator - they were fine, so I'm assuming that isn't the cause, at least.

Does the engine idle/run smoothly? Or shake like there's a misfire?

Has your gas mileage decreased lately?

Go to the top of the FWD Deville/Fleetwood page, and read the "sticky" thread on how to pull codes. List any codes you may find, AND THEIR DEFINITIONS, here (there's a link within the sticky with definitions).

Sounds to me like you are running excessively rich. Is the '89 multiport injected?

How did they check the head gaskets? Did they do an exhaust gas test of the coolant? Are you still losing coolant?

No, TB. And the FPR is internal to the TB.

Re: Replaced The Water Pump, Now White Exhaust?

The only code I get is:

F48 - Refrigerant System problem (which I was aware of beforehand)

I cleared them a few days ago, but I had also had:

E13 - Oxygen Sensor Not Ready (this is getting replaced next payday anyhow)

Yes, it shakes a bit, and my gas mileage has decreased in the last week or so.

I have no clue how they checked the head gaskets, and I'm no longer losing coolant.

I wouldn't worry about the head gaskets, 4.5/4.9s aren't known for HG issues.

Does the engine shake rhythmically, or does it just run "rough"?

How old are the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor?

Rough more than rhythmically, I'd say. As far as how old the rest is, I have no idea - it was a friend's car, he didn't know much about any of it.

See what happens after you get that oxygen sensor problem fixed. Water pump won't cause the problem unless it's leaking and smoking from under the hood.

White "smoke" that smells like "raw gas" can only mean one thing. With a description like "we're talking, if you stop at a stop sign there are times where you can barely see behind you", it should be pretty easily determined if it is gas. Hell, if you flicked your Bic next to the tail pipe it should look like a flame thrower if it in fact is gas and is that bad. Might check to see if one or both of the TB injectors are stuck open.

Check your PCV valve. If it is cloged it may cause the smoke and on some cars the wrong valve can cause the smoking.
