Angry Stupid donut spare self destructed

I know better than to have only one of GM's infamous donut spare tires. I checked it late Aug before a trip and it was fine. Today I was vac the trunk and noticed some condensation so I yanked the spare out. The stupid thing is destroyed yet holding 50lbs of air. Top side is perfect condition. I keep a full size in it during trips anyways. Guess I should be glad someone spilled water in the trunk and I had to clean it up. I'd check my donuts if I was you. Luckily I have several rims and tires that fit both the Deville and my Park Ave. I cut some 2x4's for a support and threw em in the spare tire well so it doesn't collapse. I wish the spare tire well was for a full size though.

That is just PATHETIC. These cars should have came factory equipped with a full size spare. I may just make the spot for my donut bigger and stick a regular tire in there.

Usually happens after they are mounted and on the road. They truly are next to useless.

Imagine if it had a full size spare.... Yes, it might be better, but that extra weight is going to show up in your gas mileage......

    10lbs of extra weight? hmm......

Spares are largely unnecessary anymore. I am surprised they are still included with most new cars. Some makers have eliminated the spare. Of course, when you need it, you need it.

I would disagree that they are useless. The junkyard industry loves to use them as jack stands hehehe.

Of 16 years of driving and almost a million miles driven (driver for work), I've only ever used a spare once. I keep plugs in the vehicles for situations, and repair/fill tire directly on the vehicle(s).

The mini spare might be in the 10lb range, a full spare definitely weighs in more than that. A aluminum rim alone is probably going to weigh in at 20-30 lb range, then add the tire.

Just like the 1/4 mile racers used to ditch everything in the trunk including the spare, to get the fast mph.
    H.p. to weight ratio.....

Yea I think I'll keep a spare myself, weight be damned. Traveling at night with car load of people is when I'm sure I will need it. Flat in the driveway I plug anyways. I don't have good enough luck to not have a good spare.

    Ranger,

The spare in my '04 DeVille looks like it has never been out of the trunk. Are you saying that even if the tire is unused that there is a chance that it will delaminate like this when it is used...??? Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Good luck, the last one I actually used made it almost 5 miles at 20mph before it shredded at 2am....
It looked absolutely perfect too and was maybe 7 yrs old.
Check the net you'll find tons of problems with them.
