Question Water pump drive pulley removal

Is there a particular procedure or special tool required to remove the water pump drive pulley?

The grooves on mine melted when the tensioner pulley seized.

Yes. You need a power steering pump pulley removal/install tool. Not too many bucks at large parts stores or a NAPA. Metric threads.

The shroud is held on by 2 10mm nuts and a bolt. The same studs that the nuts come off of hold the tensioner to the water crossover. The tensioner mounting plate is threaded and those studs come out with a 10mm deepwell socket.

Your engine may still have the protective plastic cap screwed into the end of the cam snout. Unscrew it first. That pulley is pressed on TIGHT and you can't twist or hit the hub - break the cam or ruin the cover seal and you're in for some nasty work. The puller uses the groove in the pulley hub to pull on. The new pulley gets pressed flush with the cam snout.

Replace the tensioner pulley/bearing - you don't need to replace the whole tensioner. NAPA. New drive pulley - Chris in Parts at Rippy Cadillac over there > or maybe www.rockauto.com

Pictures and diagrams of all this in my albums - click my username, open the profile. Left column, lower part - 2 albums, 6 pages of Northstar stuff. Your water pump drive is the same as the later engines.

The pulley remover can also be "borrowed" through the rent a tool program at most parts stores.

Saw your pics and the special tool (J-38825). A couple of other posts spoke a different tool (J-38816) to install. The puller I got from Autozone won't stay hooked on, so am taking it back and see if I can talked to a "seasoned" clerk who can understand what I'm trying to do.

Re: Water pump drive pulley removal

Kicker is, those dedicated GM/Kent-Moore special tools are absolutely stratospheric in price, so we make do with different pump pulley tool sets.

You could pick up a small 3-jaw gear puller and grind the jaw tips into flats that would fit the pulley hub groove........ if you have a bench grinder. The installer can be jury-rigged at any hardware store - a long proper metric full thread bolt (oiled), stack of greased flat washers and a nut. You offer up the new pulley to the cam snout, screw in the mess of bolt/washers/nut, get things straight, and begin screwing the nut down the bolt: pushes the pulley onto the cam. Hub flush.

I saw another post that mentioned Harbor Freight for a puller...and I just happen to have one here in Clarksville. Will see what they have and also consider the grind to fit option as well.

WHat size (dia/length) would that metric bolt have to be to reinstall the pulley?
