    Re: starter????

i just had a starter go out. same thing no codes. i would just here a click. it seems like a pain to take out but its not to bad if you work on your own cars for simple things.

    Re: starter????

the CLICK is the starter solenoid -
which means power IS getting to the starter -
so it is likely the problem IS the starter -

WITHOUT the CLICK - you are NOT getting power to the starter -
    COULD BE -
    bad ignition switch -
    bad neutral safety switch -
    bad relay -
    blown fuse -
    bad starter solenoid -
    etc -

    try this -
with your foot on the brake -
    ignition ON -
    shift down to 1 - HARD -
then shift back to PARK - HARD -
    try the starter -

if that didn't work - try this -
WITH FOOT ON THE BRAKE -
    ignition to START -
wiggle the shift lever while in park -
    if that doesn't work -
    try it in NEUTRAL -
if that doesn't work - turn the key OFF -

the above procedure is for a possible bad Neutral Safety Switch -

    Re: starter????

ok this is what we did, before i got response from basscatt,....we went and jump started it and it cranked up, brought home, andow will not crank, no clicking noise...so we did both procedures that basscatt suggested (if we did correctly) (we = friends),,,,then it did not crank...so i am going to figure Neutral Safety switch????? Where is location and is it easy to fix????

    Re: starter????

the neutral safety switch IS ONE POSSIBILITY -
but it could be several other things also -

if the car will start by jumping it -
the problem is probably NOT the NSS -
    and probably NOT fuses -

I would suspect a bad ground - loose cables - or a bad battery -
you need to start back tracking power -
from the starter back to the ignition switch -

    Re: starter????

starter is under the intake manifold -

but if it will start with a jump -
the starter is NOT the problem -

have the battery LOAD TESTED -
a brand new battery can be defective -

check the cables at the battery and the connectors under the hood -

ground wires are a fairly common problem - try this -

connect the jumper cable directly from the negative post on the battery -
to the negative terminal under the hood -

if the car starts - you have a bad ground somewhere -

    Re: starter????

oops - forgot your Deville has the battery under the hood -

the newer ones are under the back seat -
and have special jumper terminals under the hood -
so - disregard that part -

    Re: starter????

begin by looking closely at the battery connections and the battery -

if the car will always start with a jump -
the rest of the connections and parts must be OK -
