I've been coming across info like this, how can I tell which is the better one?
I was going to hit the GM dealer around the corner for a water pump, do you think its safe to say they would supply the better of the bunch? Rockautos AC Delco was only around $44
i think and that low price concerned me. I dont care if its ac Delco or aftermarket brand, I just want to make sure I get the right one.

Most owners will agree that you just close your eyes, pick one, and hope for the best. We had a thread that addressed this a while back, and there was so little consistency that no conclusions were drawn.

I personally have had the best luck with Advance Auto's in-house brand. Never any return customers with those units, for some reason.

The warranty might tell you something...except for maybe autozone.

As far as these water pumps, warranties don't seem to be related to actual component quality (many times the "economy" and "premium" pumps are the exact same part - just with different length warranties and prices!) , but they do ensure that you'll get a replacement if it fails.

That said, it's a good point - choosing brands with decent warranties is probably the best advice we can give. The rest is just chance.

Getting back to the lifter/ cam issue, you need to drop the lifter back in its bore and rotate this engine to verify proper lifter lift compared to the others. I think the cam lobe is worn and there is too much clearance there, allowing the pushrod to jump around and beat up the lifter. I WOULDN'T BUY ANY PARTS TILL THATS VERIFIED!

That sounds like a good possibility, thanks Carnut.
Sorry if this sounds amateur but what would be the proper steps to do this?

What is the proper way to do this?

If you mean to verify lift, measure the lift on the lifter next to the one that came apart. Use a metal machist's small ruler that has a sliding stop on it or, ideally a dial indicator. Put the distributor back in before rotating the engine so as to not loose the TDC relationship.

K, thanks Carnut. How much allowance is...allowed, if any. I know ill just be comparing the two but how much of a difference in the lift is TOO much.
ill be out there this weekend and post my results.
Thanks for all the great advice guys.

Well, the difference would have to be rather dramatic to allow the pushrod to beat the lifter. You can probably see the difference while rotating the engine. measuring it or not.

Intake and exhaust are the same lift? I didn't know that.

I've gone to using the cheapest new water pump I can find. So far so good. But it does remind me that I still need to order up a spare to have it on hand. At least they are easy to change!

Well, according to the guy who put the motor in my car (a 1993 4.9 liter in a 1994 Deville) the motors are exactly the same, for the 91-94 or something like that (Check with a GM mechanic, that is what he did), so if you can find the part for the same motor in a different year, it should work just fine. I would NEVER try and put something from a 4.6 Northstar into the 4.9 though.

If you are going to be doing this more than just this one time, have your mom (or whoever own the car) invest in the Repair Manual on CD. The one for my 94 Deville was only $15, and as I said, it will work for the MOTOR of the '92 and the '94.
