Check Gas Cap --SES light on ---slight gas smell- 2000 Deville

I recently filled up with Gas and had a leak above my driver side rear tire( where the tank is filled) after this my check gas cap indicator has been shown and my SES light has been on...I have not had the "physical" gas leak since the fill up but can smell gas every once in awhile. I took it to Auto Zone and they ran the codes and it came to replace gas cap which did not work..they said it was a possible vacuum leak...is there anything I can do without taking it to Mechanic? Any suggestions or help would be great............

Rusted out fuel tank filler pipe. Common in Rust Belt, winter salt, and seashore cars.

The leak above the driver's side rear tire points to the filler pipe, not the EVAP canister or solenoid.

www.gmpartsgiant.com Get to your car, year, system - the "Get Info" tab opens a parts diagram blowup.

Your car has its own built-in trouble code scanner/memory system. Study the sticky post ^^^ "How to pull codes". Practice.
